Before anyone says well you’re posting here it can’t be too bad - I was stung TWO hours ago and it isn’t abating . Sheer hot poker fucking agony

Right on the end of my finger, the only things which help are ice water but the second I take it out it’s back again

please help 🙏

I am afraid of wasps.
I am exceptionally afraid of hornets.
I don't even like the look of the name written down.
I am sympathetic but I would have abandoned you to your fate had I been there.

I’m the same, I have no clue why I’m reading this thread as I can’t stand anything with wings. The pp who said it’s very hard not to pass the fear onto our kids is absolutely right! I don’t want my kids to be a massive wimp like me but last time I had something in the house, I had to call a neighbour for help eekk

Vinegar is good for wasp stings. Maybe try that.

Why did you let it live? They aren't native are they?

That's a European hornet not one of the yellow legged Asian hornets.

EH are huge and very noisy.

I’m terrified now thanks to this thread.

I hope the pain calms down soon OP.

If you can bear it, heat. It breaks down the protein in the venom. It has to be really hot. I used to use a teaspoon in a mug of just boiled water, but now I have a gizmo from Beurer. The sooner you do it after the sting, the better.

I got stung by a hornet on my inside forearm and it was unbelievably painful. I used heat, which gave some relief. It was painful though for several days and I had a hard lump the size of an egg for about a week. It didn't help that I also got a jellyfish sting on it a couple of days after.

One came into my living room today, it hit the window as it did and made a huge thud, genuinely without a word of a lie, it was the size of my thumb, and sounded like a motorbike. I was in a zoom call in there, and was genuinely thinking I might need to make a run for it. It found its way out after hitting the window another few times.

This happened to me on a very hot night last summer!

I was watching tv in the living room around midnight with the windows open as it was so stuffy, suddenly this huge noise as a hornet flew in and was banging against the walls and ceiling lights.

So terrifying! I immediately ran to shut the door so it couldn't reach anywhere else, DC were sleeping with door open and DH away with work

The noise was incredible and frightening, had to turn the lights off and eventually it banged its way back out. Definitely was not your average wasp

Am rather concerned they will make a comeback this summer, it was the first time I'd encountered one! Confused

A couple of years ago, a false widow spider bit me.
I didn't feel the bite itself, but the aftermath.
Dear, god, the aftermath! 😫

You have my sympathy @SunflowerandHoney

Vinegar helps neutralise wasp stings. Not sure if it works the same way with hornet stings though.

Vinegar for wasps and hornets, bicarbonate of soda for bees and ants.

Wasps and hornets have alkaline stings, bees and ants are acidic - you're basically trying to neutralise it.

But I'd also go for antihistamines.

My finger is twice the size it should be and I vomited twice in the night

The pain has eased off but very stiff sore hand.

Thank you all for tips, believe me I tried them all through the night!

That doesn't sound good. I'd maybe try to go to minor injuries today and see if it's infected. DH had some sort of insect bite that got infected a few years ago, had the red line tracking up his arm, and it needed antibiotics to shift it.

EBearhug · 11/05/2024 17:11

I agree - I would at least call 111.

Have you managed to speak to a pharmacist at least? I don't think I would want to leave that.
