Before anyone says well you’re posting here it can’t be too bad - I was stung TWO hours ago and it isn’t abating . Sheer hot poker fucking agony

Right on the end of my finger, the only things which help are ice water but the second I take it out it’s back again

please help 🙏

Sympathies OP. I got stung on my finger by a bee on Tuesday and it's still really hot and swollen. Hurts like a bastard as there's not much skin to spare. I know hornet stings are worse, so, ouch!!

Why did you let it live? They aren't native are they?

Now the first part of your post was the first thing I thought. Couldn't give a fuck if they're native, if you sting me you're dead 😂 except for bees as they only sting in dire circumstances 😁

AFortnightLost · 10/05/2024 21:45

Aren't hornets a major threat to bees? I'm not sure letting it out alive was the right thing to do?

ineedtostopbeingdramaticfirst · 10/05/2024 21:49

It looks like it's glaring at you 😡

Sunnyandsilly · 10/05/2024 21:49

One came into my living room today, it hit the window as it did and made a huge thud, genuinely without a word of a lie, it was the size of my thumb, and sounded like a motorbike. I was in a zoom call in there, and was genuinely thinking I might need to make a run for it. It found its way out after hitting the window another few times.

OldTinHat · 10/05/2024 22:07

Just a thought - is that thing in the glass an Asian hornet? Aren't they supposed to be reported? (Don't ask me who to.)

It’s the Asian Hornet (aka the yellow legged hornet) which is a danger to bees, much larger than the native hornet, which isn’t a threat, and a useful predator of insect pests. The Asian Hornet was first seen in the UK in 2016, and is a notifiable pest, due to the danger to the bee population.

It appears to be the native hornet, as it doesn’t have the markings of the Asian hornet.

I was stung on the hand by a hornet a couple of years ago, it was agony, like having my hand slammed in a door constantly. I kept an ice pack on it, that was the only thing which helped. After about 5 hours the pain began to ease off.

Hornets don't leave a sting in so you don't have to worry about that.

Asian hornets are smaller than european hornets.

Alicewinn · 10/05/2024 22:20

Jesus C!!
is that climate change?

IamSlave · 10/05/2024 22:45

I thought hornets were dangerous people and also nature and native insects?

sproutsandparsnips · 10/05/2024 22:51

I am afraid of wasps.
I am exceptionally afraid of hornets.
I don't even like the look of the name written down.
I am sympathetic but I would have abandoned you to your fate had I been there.

Towerofsong · 10/05/2024 22:55

Don't drink alcohol, that increases histamine in the body

Sympathies, when I was 8/9 I knocked a hornets nest off a wall, well the hornets weren’t happy, I had about 100 stings, you can’t outrun angry hornets!

It’s really hard to not to pass on my fear to the kids, horrible things

You poor little sausage!

MsMuffinWalloper · 10/05/2024 23:00

With wasp stings my mum used to dampen a cloth with apple cider vinegar to draw out the poison. If you've got any vinegar that might be worth a try?

3luckystars · 10/05/2024 23:01

Maybe he didn’t like having his photo taken?

russiandwarf · 10/05/2024 20:40

Vinegar?? I drank out of a can with a wasp in last summer 🙈 It stung inside my mouth and it was hell. I held vinegar in my mouth and it numbed it a bit. Otherwise…sudocrem? And a stiff drink

Wow you were lucky! I think the owner of SEGA died because he drank a wasp in a coke can!
Hate the bastards.

FiatEarth · 10/05/2024 23:05

A few years ago I got stung in my knee by a hornet and then another one appeared and stung one of my dogs.

It hurt but I was ok but the dog froze and refused to walk and had to be carried.

Luckily a man over the woods came to my rescue and helped me by carrying the dog for me.

Dog was fine by the next day.

I had some discomfort but it went after a few days.

Two weeks to the day later the whole are became inflamed and was very painful.

At the time I googled it and found others had experiences the same thing after a hornet sting.

It was bizarre. Quite painful and I used calamine lotion on it.

ILoveYouItsRuiningMyLife · 10/05/2024 23:06

God that fucker looks absolutely raging.

I am the exact same even saying the word ‘hornet’ puts a fear in me 🤣

I’m terrified of them all and they seem to get bigger and louder every year.

CointreauVersial · 10/05/2024 23:27

Ugh. That sounds painful.

It's Queen Wasp season here - the warm weather has woken them up, so just about every morning there are one or two of them in the bathroom (they hibernate in the loft, and crawl out towards the light). Every time I squash one I think of all the thousands of wasps that will never be born.

In fact, if you see a big stripy beastie during the day at this time of year it might well be a queen wasp, not a hornet. At night, it will be a hornet, because wasps only fly in daylight.

Omg one of these things tried to come into the flat today, it was fucking HUGE. This is a reminder for me to close the window right now. Sorry I’m no help OP but hope you feel better soon
