Is an expensive mattress worth it?

Just that really! Our old mattress is on its way (gone?) out, to the extent that I have spent the last few nights on the sofa because it is killing my back!
Been to look at some mattresses today, and tried the igel mattress, which felt lovely, 10 year guarantee etc, but the price- ouch!! Can do interest free credit and wouldn't be outwith our budget, but is it worth it?? On one hand, a good night's sleep feels like something I would happily pay for right now, but just not sure if cheaper alternatives would be as good? Any insights/ opinions would be very helpful !

My daughter has eczema and overheats quite easily which makes her itchy. I bought her a latex relyon mattress as all the reviews I’d read about latex mattresses were that they were excellent for eczema sufferers. It was 1.2k but I’m very much considering upgrading mine now to match; it is such a comfortable, soft yet supportive, mattress that whenever I sleep in there I get an amazing night’s sleep. It makes such a difference and she’s not as itchy and doesn’t overheat in summer or get too cold in winter. Her eczema has calmed down loads on a night time so she doesn’t wake as frequently either. Worth every penny

I am not convinced it makes a massive difference above a certain price (maybe about £1,000).

I do think a large element is psychological. If you told people an £800 mattress cost £5,000, I am convinced the majority would say they had never slept so well. And, conversely, I am sure if you told someone a £5,000 cost £500, they would find things to gripe about it….

It is a bit like baby buggies, a lot of the money is just about feel good factor and nothing to do with functions comfort.

I agree with this.

I have an Eve mattress. Worth every penny

I have one too and it’s the most comfortable mattress I’ve ever had.

18 years ago we paid £1.7k for a mattress from John Lewis (I have a bad back). We were going to replace it about 7 years ago, and before we did, we stayed in a holiday cottage for two weeks and it had such a an amazingly comfortable mattress. It was an IKEA mattress. So we bought the same one (I think it was less than £700 for a superking). It is still amazingly comfortable. I love my bed!!

Ok - you all convinced me that it was worth investing a bit more than I would otherwise so I have just ordered a Vispring king-size mattress in an online bank holiday sale for £1500 all in including delivery and taking away and recycling the old one.

I liked the looks of the Premier Inn bed (thanks to those who pointed out I could find it online!), but it said it had a pillow top which means it can't be turned. Probably fine for a big hotel chain but I wanted something I could flip over so went with the Vispring.

We have a Harrison Spinks. Stuffed with Yorkshire wool 😃

We have this too it is the best mattress ever. My DH travels the world staying in some of the most expensive hotels and says there is nothing like our bed at home.

Ours is a pricey Hypnos and it’s worth every penny.

Tracker1234 · 09/05/2024 22:52

I have a V spring. They are often ££££ but I love my bed!

Danielle8p · 09/07/2025 21:32

@AllBlackEverything is it still comfy? I tried one out today and not sure whether to go for it. What one was it pls x

Absolutely worth the money to buy a decent mattress. Not a gel, latex or similar though.

Just a proper solid mattress with thousands of springs and good padding. One that you can turn regularly.

Harrison Spinks, Relyon, Woolroom.

Roselilly36 · 10/07/2025 07:10

I like Relyon Mattresses too. We previously had a memory foam one that lasted for years, replaced it with a luxury Pashmina one recently, handmade in Somerset, natural materials, would recommend.

I bought an all natural fibre one stuffed with sheep’s wool from a small manufacturer in Yorkshire though I did buy it in a regular bed shop. It was last year, just the mattress and around 1.3k. It is lovely to sleep on. The original mattress and iron bed stead had cost 1k in total 25 years ago.
