Is an expensive mattress worth it?

ThePlatypusAlwaysTriumphs · 09/05/2024 15:14

Just that really! Our old mattress is on its way (gone?) out, to the extent that I have spent the last few nights on the sofa because it is killing my back!
Been to look at some mattresses today, and tried the igel mattress, which felt lovely, 10 year guarantee etc, but the price- ouch!! Can do interest free credit and wouldn't be outwith our budget, but is it worth it?? On one hand, a good night's sleep feels like something I would happily pay for right now, but just not sure if cheaper alternatives would be as good? Any insights/ opinions would be very helpful !

IKEA do really good mattresses!

MyGirlDaisy · 09/05/2024 15:18

I second Ikea mattresses too!

HumanRightsAreHumanRights · 09/05/2024 15:18

I think so.
Most people spend more time in bed than in their car/sat on the sofa and you wouldn't expect a decent car or sofa to be super cheap.

A good nights sleep improves every minute I'm awake, so I see it as one of the most important things to invest in for a home.

You can't just buy the one with the high price tag though, you have to go and test a load out to find the one that suits you.

We spent a lot (really a lot) on a latex mattress a couple of years ago, after giving up on our John Ryan one (which got uncomfortable very quickly). I mean, the latex one is comfy, but I'm still not 100% sure if it was worth all the money. One of the things I do really like about it is that you can vary the firmness on each side of the bed. So DH can have his side firmer than I do, because the mattress is made up of three layers of latex of varying firmness. And I don't wake up with aches and pains, in the way I did on the John Ryan one (which was a conventional pocket sprung mattress, which was also pretty expensive I think).

Next time, we might just go for an Ikea one, as you anyway typically have to replace a mattress every 7-10 years, no matter how good quality it is.

We have just spent over £3k on a new Hypnos bed and as far as I'm concerned it's worth every single penny. I am definitely sleeping better on the lovely new mattress.

We had our last bed for over 20 years so I expect this new one will see me out.

AsphaltBeach · 09/05/2024 15:21

My nan used to say you should buy the best pair of shoes you can afford and the best bed, because if you're not in one you're in the other.

HippyKayYay · 09/05/2024 15:21

I just looked up the latex one we bought and it looks like the company has now gone bust (Una mattresses), so make of that what you will! (And also demonstrates how worthless an x-year guarantee is!)

Your Nan was a wise woman!

I certainly do not regret the considerable sum I spent on a super comfortable, hand made, pocket sprung mattress.

You spent ( ideally ) 8 hours out of 24 hours asleep , 33% of your day/life.
A better mattress is conductive to better sleep
quality , knock on effect to your day.
They don't often get changed.
If you can afford it, get the best quality one you can afford.
Better sleep = a better day.
Skimp on other things in life, a nice mattress is a VERY high use daily item that makes a difference.
Always spend money on items that you use a lot, yet don't change often.

TwigTheWonderKid · 09/05/2024 15:27

We bought our mattress from John Lewis almost 20 years ago. Can't remember how much it cost but it was a lot of money back then. It's still incredibly comfortable.

ThePlatypusAlwaysTriumphs · 09/05/2024 15:28

Thanks all! Still v. undecided! Problem with cheaper versions is that they're online, and difficult to try out.

We bought a Simba luxe mattress, in super king, just over 1600 pounds in the sale, far from the most expensive mattress out there, but a lot for a mattress. Totally worth it. The other one started hurting my hip as I sleep on my side, and it was about 20 years old embarrassingly enough.

id recommend if you’re not hooked on the IGel. But I’d not recommend the cheaper Simba models.

HolyFalseEquivalencyBatman · 09/05/2024 15:31

The most comfortable mattress I’ve ever spent the night on was in a hotel. The chain advertised that you could buy the same mattress. It was around 10 years ago and it was £1,100 then. I still think wistfully of all the amazing nights sleep I could have had if we weren't so skint at the time.

Allthehorsesintheworld · 09/05/2024 15:34

And I can’t recommend Dormeo toppers in case you decide to go down that route. Worst thing I ever bought, so wish I’d returned it within the 60 days. £250 wasted.

Try out all the beds you can in IKEA, Dreams, Benson for Beds and hopefully one will feel right for you.

Ilovemyshed · 09/05/2024 15:36

Can highly recommend Wool Room and they have various shops so it is possible to try. Prices are a bit ouchy but they do have good sales and also there is a clearance section on their website.

Honestly, having bought a few mattresses and some mistakes, I think you need something with:

Mostly natural materials
LOTS of springs (2500 or more)
Something which is dense and very heavy
Something you can turn every few weeks.

I also reckon you need to spend min £1000 plus to get that.

Ilovemyshed · 09/05/2024 15:37

Additionally, two makes I have seen in hotels where we have found them to be luxuriously comfy are Relyon and Harrison Spinks.

eveoha · 09/05/2024 15:41

Dunlopillo - have a look at Ebay etc - cool durable and so comfortable 👍☘️

Bjorkdidit · 09/05/2024 15:46

I think there has to be a limit, unless you really are made of money.

Our mattress cost about £600 and it's about 7 years old, showing no signs of wear and is very comfortable and supportive. It's a Leesa 'mattress in a box' type but I don't think they sell them any more. But when I was researching them, I think all these type were much of a muchness.

So not the cheapest and not the most expensive by far. I also agree that Ikea mattresses are excellent, and some of those are much cheaper. A £3k mattress is probably excellent, but is it 5 times better or more durable than ours, I doubt it. But mattresses are very personal, so try some out in shops or if you're ordering online, get one with a no quibble returns policy.

Crikeyalmighty · 09/05/2024 15:49

We bought a dormeo octasmart after seeing it advertised on TV recently but not having zillions to spend- best £324 I've ever spent. It's pretty firm - almost Japanese like but fantastically comfortable if you like a firm mattress and has a great 'trial' period too and a huge guarantee

We also bought the Simba Luxe in the sale last year, I love it. Highly recommend.

@Allthehorsesintheworld you see I love my dormeo octasmart - I guess we are all different- it is really firm though - wouldn't suit anyone who wants a really deep 'springy' base

Move22 · 09/05/2024 15:51

Recently bought a dream cloud mattress arrived in a box was around £800
totally recommend
i love my bed so comfy

ThePlatypusAlwaysTriumphs · 09/05/2024 16:01

Thank you all! I've decided to take the plunge! It's a 3000 pocket spring igel, and it was £1850, but we did get quite a few freebies (fancy pillows, mattress protector, care package, bed care kit, delivery and recycling of our old mattress) thrown in. I can't wait to hopefully get a decent night's sleep! Will report back once it arrives!

Relyon Emperor Medium Mattress, absolutely amazing mattress, so comfortable. I would definitely recommend. Worth every penny.

AllBlackEverything · 09/05/2024 16:40

We got an igel 6 months ago, and it's one of the best purchases we have ever made. Can't recommend it highly enough.
