Is an expensive mattress worth it?

Just that really! Our old mattress is on its way (gone?) out, to the extent that I have spent the last few nights on the sofa because it is killing my back!
Been to look at some mattresses today, and tried the igel mattress, which felt lovely, 10 year guarantee etc, but the price- ouch!! Can do interest free credit and wouldn't be outwith our budget, but is it worth it?? On one hand, a good night's sleep feels like something I would happily pay for right now, but just not sure if cheaper alternatives would be as good? Any insights/ opinions would be very helpful !

Thank you all! I've decided to take the plunge! It's a 3000 pocket spring igel, and it was £1850, but we did get quite a few freebies (fancy pillows, mattress protector, care package, bed care kit, delivery and recycling of our old mattress) thrown in. I can't wait to hopefully get a decent night's sleep! Will report back once it arrives!

Oh I see you've gone for it! Great choice, hope you love it!

We spent £1800 on a Tempur mattress, MASSIVE splurge for us but honestly, its worth every single penny.

Newestname002 · 09/05/2024 17:04

I've always bought the best mattress I could afford because good quality sleep is so essential to good health - especially considering you spend about a third of your life in it each day.

I bought my last mattress, plus divan base and headboard at least ten years ago at a 75% discount (on my trusty credit card) as the department store was closing down. Still extremely comfortable and always sleep very well in it.

Best purchase I ever made - apart from my home. 🌹

My nan used to say you should buy the best pair of shoes you can afford and the best bed, because if you're not in one you're in the other.

Absolutely best advise

We got an igel 6 months ago, and it's one of the best purchases we have ever made. Can't recommend it highly enough.

So good to hear! I'm quite excited now!!

I thought I was doing the right thing buying an expensive Tempur mattress and it was the most expensive mistake of my life. It felt so nice in the shop but when it arrived it was so much harder than the one I had tried. After nearly three years of torture it's finally starting to get a bit more comfy but I really wish I'd just bought the double version of the very cheap mattress that's on the spare bed and which is much more comfortable to sleep on.

AloeVerity · 09/05/2024 17:16

My favourite mattress came from Ikea!

IncognitoUsername · 09/05/2024 17:17

We have an Emma and I love it now but it took a couple of weeks to get used to it.

fedupwithbeingcold · 09/05/2024 17:23

I have an Eve mattress. Worth every penny

Xiaoxiong · 09/05/2024 17:28

Does anyone know what Premier Inn uses? I always sleep so well on their beds.

I loved the mattress I slept on at a little place in Cornwall but all they could tell me was that it was a Vispring, but not the firmness. I wish I could try them all out to see.

Horsesontheloose · 09/05/2024 17:34

Nope! We had an expensive gel cooling memory foam whatever mattress that cost a ridiculous amount. When we needed a new mattress I took a punt online on a medium firm mattress from dreams on sale at around £350. Absolutely no different to the expensive one.

Go on their website, they sell them. Hypnos. DH got one, he likes it. He used to spend a lot of time away with work staying in PIs, so it made sense!

I have a Vispring. Did a tonne of research and kept reading about cheaper ones that were as comfortable as a Vispring, then went and lied on one. It's been fantastic but does need a lot of turning as I'm heavy and it dips. Back is so much better tho.

And to the girl who took my pic in John Lewis when I was testing mattresses, I wish I'd had a word! Cheeky mare.

BananaLambo · 09/05/2024 17:35

We spent just under £3k on a Hypnos mattress. We went to John Lewis and lay on it at least 5 times before we committed. Our rationale was - if it lasts 10 years then that’s about £300 a year, or £150 a year each, so less than 50p a night per person. Assuming you spend 8 hours a night in bed that’s about 7p an hour for something you can sleep in, have sex in, read in, watch TV in, etc. It’s great value for something supremely comfortable.

CpOb · 09/05/2024 17:37

Depends how expensive.

We spent about £1k on the highest reviewed one on John Lewis in the process range.

You can spend a lot more. But we're very happy with ours.

We've had £200-300 ones before and there's a huge difference between them.

I can't see how much better we'd find ours had we spent £5k though. Perfect for us.

A very wise lady your Nan.

caringcarer · 09/05/2024 18:13

You spend approximately 1/3 of your life in bed so getting a comfortable one is essential. If you have a bad back or shoulders even more important.

SabrinaThwaite · 09/05/2024 18:13

We had a Simmons mattress that was great and lasted well.

elevens24 · 09/05/2024 18:16

We've the Emma mattress. Can't remember which version but it was mid range and cost around £800. I think it's fab.

FoofOfTheWalkingDead · 09/05/2024 18:19

I hope your new mattress works out. We got a £400 memory foam mattress on a groupon deal once and it didn't last the year. The next one we bought was a £3000 horsehair and hemp felly from John Lewis that has been worth every penny. That was 10 years ago and while it's nearing the end of it's life now still love our bed. I literally snuggle in and say 'Hello, Bed' every night.

You absolutely get what you pay for when it comes to mattresses.

This.

Similarly I have a great TV because I spend a lot of time watching it.

Enko · 09/05/2024 18:21

I hated our IKEA mattress

We have a John Lewis own brand it was 1500 but omg worth every penny

TheValueOfEverything · 09/05/2024 18:23

Yes. Every penny.

You spend half of your entire life in bed.

I love my expensive mattress so much. More than a holiday, a car, jewellery, a year’s worth of wine etc etc etc

Newbutoldfather · 09/05/2024 18:26

I am not convinced it makes a massive difference above a certain price (maybe about £1,000).

I do think a large element is psychological. If you told people an £800 mattress cost £5,000, I am convinced the majority would say they had never slept so well. And, conversely, I am sure if you told someone a £5,000 cost £500, they would find things to gripe about it….

It is a bit like baby buggies, a lot of the money is just about feel good factor and nothing to do with functions comfort.
