Canvassing opinions!! What time do your 7 year olds and 10 year olds go to bed and what time do they eat dinner?

And do you sit down and have dinner together?

DH don’t think we have the timings right at all.

10 year old. Dinner as soon as I can 6/6:30, another snack 8/8:30, in bed reading 8:45, lights out 9/9:30

Shes always gone to sleep around 9pm. Couldn’t ever manage to make it earlier

flummingbird · 08/05/2024 22:00

DD(7) eats 4.30-5ish, up to bed at 7.30 with lights off by 8.15 after reading/audiobook. Weekend dinner can be a bit later but bedtime is pretty rigid (single parent and I need my evenings for my sanity)

museumum · 08/05/2024 22:01

10yr old eats about 6:30/7 together about half the week separate on nights with activities. Goes upstairs for bed at 8:30

11, almost 12 year old. In bed at 19.30, and asleep by 20.30. Sleeps quite happily until 0745 the next day, although my sister thinks I'm a monster for still maintaining such an early bedtime.

Roastiesarethebestbit · 08/05/2024 22:10

7 and 10 year olds here. Family dinner most nights, 6:30 ish, sometimes later. 7 year old has bedtime at 8:00 and 10 year old goes up at 8:30.

PrincessHoneysuckle · 08/05/2024 22:14

10yr old dinner 6pm bed 8.30-9 in the week

BendingSpoons · 08/05/2024 22:15

8yo. Start dinner between 5pm and 6pm. Some nights eat as a family, other nights one of us eats with the children e.g. twice a week DH isn't home until later so I eat with them once food is ready.

Bedtime - in bed 7.45ish apart from Saturdays, when it's 8.15ish. Sometimes she goes straight to sleep, sometimes she reads until 8/8.15. Some nights she comes back down to say she can't get to sleep.

Usually up about 6.30 (anywhere from 6-7am)

EvilNextDoor · 08/05/2024 22:17

I was always really strict on meal and bed time at those ages dinner was between 5/6pm bedtime was 7.30 read then lights out not that they ever did and they were both asleep by 8pm, it crept up as they got older, I used to listen out for in the night garden as that signalled bed time - both slept till 7/7.30am

One teen and tween now school nights in bed at 8.30 lights out again they never turn them bloody off by 9pm we have started eating later as a family so anytime between 6-8pm as we all eat together. Non school nights it’s whatever they want really as long as they are not up at midnight

Gymmum82 · 08/05/2024 22:18

7 and 10. They eat at 5. We do not eat together. Too early for me and DH isn’t even home. They go to bed at 8 but not normally asleep before 8.30.
Have to be up by 6.30 to be ready for breakfast club at 7.30

GameOfJones · 08/05/2024 22:27

I have a 7 year old. They eat dinner anywhere between 5.30pm and 6.30pm depending on clubs/work/what we have going on. We eat a family dinner together.

Getting ready for bed starts at 7pm and by 7.30pm the adults are back downstairs and DD is bathed, in bed with her book etc. She normally reads or faffs about with her teddies for an hour or so, so is actually asleep around 8.30pm.

In the Night Garden at 10 and 7?

KitKatKathy · 08/05/2024 22:44

11 and 8 year old - Dinner is at 7pm. Getting ready for bed starts at 8.45 and faffing ends around 9.15.

Mishmashs · 08/05/2024 22:58

6 and 9 year old come home from Afterschool club about 5 ish and have usually eaten by 6.15pm. We rarely eat the evening meal together but want to start at least one night a week 6 yr old we aim for 7.30pm lights out and 9 year old 8.30pm lights out. They’re both tired from a long day at school and club and sometimes extra curriculars and fall asleep quickly.

BananaSpanner · 08/05/2024 23:08

We don’t eat with the kids on week days, they eat too early.

12 and 9. They eat about 5/5.30. We eat about 7.30. They go to bed about 9 ish most nights. We’re happy for 12 year old to stay up later if they want but we’re an early rising house so they’re often tired and happy to go to bed.

SkankingWombat · 08/05/2024 23:12

My DCs are 7 & 9yo, although will turn 8 & 10yo next month.

Dinner time varies depending on the day and which extracurriculars they have. Mon-Fri it could be anywhere between 5.30 and 8pm. Weekends it is rarely before 7pm.

DD1 has lights out at 9.30pm Sun-Thurs, Friday is about 10.30pm due to her sport, then Saturday depends on if we are out or at home.
DD2 has lights out at 8.30pm Sun-Fri, then Saturday varies as for DD1 but less 15mins because DD2 is always put to bed first.
We tried an earlier bedtime for DD1, but she would still be awake staring at the ceiling at 11pm (and sometimes later). A sleep workshop recommended giving a later time, and it works much better for her alongside having upped her exercise quota considerably. DD2 needs more sleep and has no problem drifting off, but would scream blue murder if we made her go to bed more than an hour before her sister. 8.30pm 6 nights a week is a workable compromise!

ThisIsMyRubbishUsername · 08/05/2024 23:21

Dinner together around 6.30 - 7pm. Up to bed between 8 -8.30. Lights out 9.30. Usually asleep by 10. They are night owls!

Sandysandwich · 08/05/2024 23:43

Dinner around 6:30/7, we do eat together except on one night where one has a late club. They are in bed for 9/9:30

Orangello · 08/05/2024 23:51

8 and 10, we eat 7-8ish (we always eat together) and they go to bed 9.30-10. Later on weekends. Never had any issues getting them up (before 7), so guess it works.

Solasum · 08/05/2024 23:53

10yo we eat together around 6.30. Go upstairs 8ish, read, light off at 9. He sleeps through til 7am so definitely needs the sleep. Half an hour later on Friday and Saturday nights.

His behaviour changes drastically if he goes to bed later

AllTheChaos · 09/05/2024 00:00

10 year old DD generally has dinner 7.30 or 8pm (varies due to clubs, how hungry she is etc.) bedtime at 9, lights out then ideally but often not till 9.30 realistically. Shes generally asleep by about 10pm. She’s then up again at 7am. Tried earlier bedtimes, but she was then waking me at 5am as she just cannot seem to sleep more than 9 hours a night, so this is the compromise! We don’t generally eat at the same time as we don’t eat the same food (we each have different allergies, so generally I have to cook two completely separate meals). We eat together only a couple of times a month as a result. Well that and her sensory processing issues.

Doodahday88 · 09/05/2024 00:03

Mine are 8 & 10. On a school night dinner between 6pm and 7pm depending on what's happening that day and bed by 7.30pm.

DoctorDolittle · 09/05/2024 00:07

Dinner here is at 5.30pm, we eat together. Bedtime is at 7.30pm, extra reading allowed (we read together in my bed beforehand) but lights out for younger at 7.45pm and older at 8pm. There’s never a peep out of either.
They get up in the morning at 7.30am.

NameChange30 · 09/05/2024 00:10

You haven't asked what time they get up in the morning but that's relevant too. A 9pm bedtime could mean 9 hours sleep (if child is up at 6am) or 11 hours sleep (if child is up at 8am).

I have a 7yo who wakes up around 6.30-7am and is in bed by 7.45-8pm but can take a while to settle, so is sometimes asleep by 8.15 but it can take longer. Overall I think he gets about 10.5 hours sleep on average. He doesn't really stop or rest during the day and rarely falls asleep in the car even when tired! We can't do late nights because it usually just means he wakes up even earlier and is a nightmare the next day.

Dinner is around 5-6pm and we usually eat together as a family. DH and I are used to eating dinner at that time now, so if we do eat after the kids' bedtime we need an afternoon snack to keep us going Grin

CrikeyDozes · 09/05/2024 00:13

I am shocked by lots of these responses and how early 10 year olds are going to bed.

we eat all together at 7.30pm once everyone is home from after school clubs and work etc. We aim to get ten year old in bed by 9 but in summer it’s often later. They read until about 9.45pm. That’s in the week. At weekends they are in bed by 11pm and don’t tend to read.

moleeye · 09/05/2024 00:29

6 & 10 year old

Dinner is about 4pm on the nights they aren't at After school club/swimming

6 goes up at 6.30, he's asleep by 7

10 year old goes up at 730, reads and is asleep by 8. Some nights she goes up at 7 as I can see how tired she is

Both of them need 11 hours sleep or we all suffer.

We are all early to bed, I'm an early riser, up by 5
