Canvassing opinions!! What time do your 7 year olds and 10 year olds go to bed and what time do they eat dinner?

And do you sit down and have dinner together?

DH don’t think we have the timings right at all.

My 7 year old has dinner between 4:30 and 6ish depending on the day and what's going on.

We have family dinner once a week, otherwise the kids eat together earlier either at after school club or at home.

He is in bed for about 7:30 but reads till 8:30/9

ChunkyMonkey2020 · 08/05/2024 21:42

9 year old has dinner about 630. She has a small dinner after school.

She's in bed for 930.

LBOCS2 · 08/05/2024 21:42

11 and 8 here but nothing much has changed.

They get tea at after school care, then eat a proper dinner with us at about 7. Bed is 8.30, lights off for 9.

(I say this like they're not both still up now 😂)

8 & 10 yr olds here.

We do have dinner together. DH works from home which is the only reason we can do this! Dinner is anytime between 4.45pm and 6.30pm depending on clubs / activities / plans.

On a week night we start brushing teeth, showers if needed etc around 7 / 7.15ish and then they go to bed and read. 8 yr old lights out at 8.15pm, 10 yr old is 9pm.

Curlewwoohoo · 08/05/2024 21:44

6 & 9 here but not far off, dinner at 6 all together, bedtimes 8 & 9 with lights out at 9:20.

SleepingStandingUp · 08/05/2024 21:44

Nearly 9 yo, dinner is around 6, goes up to bed about 8.30 and lights out by 9.30 roughly.

PuttingDownRoots · 08/05/2024 21:46

My youngest has just turned 11.
Dinner time depends on the extra curricular activities her or her sister have... or me! So we might eat earlier before a late activity (Scouts doesn't start until 7 for example, 20 minutes drive away) or later after an earlier activity. Or a lighter tea and a big supper around a sport session.

Bed time is generally 8.30... except for the 2 nights she is out until 9pm.

mycatsanutter · 08/05/2024 21:46

My ds 10 has tea between 4 and 6 and is usually in bed by 9, we try and eat together but if my dh is on a later shift I will probably feed ds10 early then we will eat later .

Upallnight2 · 08/05/2024 21:46

Yikes, 6 year old has dinner around 5-5.30, lights out at 10 😬 on a school night

WestrayWife · 08/05/2024 21:46

Family sit down dinner circa 6-6.30pm and then upstairs at 7.30pm, with the aim of lights out for 7 year old by 8pm. 10 year old can read until circa 8.30pm but generally just listens to an audio book in the dark.

Completely different on a night with football practice / rainbows etc as activities can start as early as 6pm and they generally don't get home from after school club until 5-5.30pm. Those nights are generally a quick and dirty tea for the person doing the activity.

Validus · 08/05/2024 21:48

Both mine eat at about 5.

the 7 year old goes to bed by 7. The older one by 8/8:15

we are up at 6am

Youdontevengohere · 08/05/2024 21:49

Mine are 8 and 10. Dinner about 6pm, they’re in bed by 8 and can read until 8.30pm. Surprised at how late some children go to bed, mine sometimes have to be woken at 7.30am after going to sleep at 8.30pm! They’d be chronically exhausted if they went to bed any later.

Youdontevengohere · 08/05/2024 21:50

Oh and we try to eat together but depends on work/hobbies/clubs etc

CuntRYMusicStar · 08/05/2024 21:50

9yo has dinner at 5.30 and then into his room for wind down/reading/lego at 7.30, lights out by 8.30. It takes him a while to fall asleep so that's why he starts early

lifesnotaspectatorsport · 08/05/2024 21:52

I have a 7yo with two younger siblings. They have a snack after school and dinner around 6.30-7pm. Bedtime around 8-8.15, we read stories in bed before lifts out. 7yo is rarely asleep before 9pm. DH and I eat late, pre-8pm is just too early for us. We all get up 7ish the next morning.

YourSnugHazelTraybake · 08/05/2024 21:52

6 1/2 yr old, we all eat around 4.30 /5ish, he's in bed at 8 most nights. He's one that needs his sleep though, he wakes up around 7.30 am at that, if he goes to bed later he's still tired in the mornings and is really grumpy and tearful.

Cbljgdpk · 08/05/2024 21:52

7 year old eats 5.30-6pm and in bed by 7.30/7.45 but asleep more like 8.30.
We don’t eat together as it’s too early for us but in slowly moving her dinner back with the idea we can in future

purpleme12 · 08/05/2024 21:53

I've got a 10 year old. Can eat between half 5 and half 6 maybe but no set time really.
I like her to be in bed ready to go to sleep at 8. Sometimes we have things on though so that doesn't happen

AnxiousSandwich · 08/05/2024 21:54

Mine are 8 & 10 and we do dinner at 1730-1800 ish in bed and ready to sleep by 1930-2000 ish. They wake at 0700.

TheGriffle · 08/05/2024 21:54

I have a 7 and just turned 11 year old. We eat dinner together anytime between 5 and 6.30ish depending on activities and work schedules.

We head upstairs for winding down time around 7.30 when they have a bath/shower, read etc. The 7 year old has a story about half 8 and is generally asleep by 9pm. The 11 year old has lights out about 9.15 and is usually asleep not long after.

ToBoneOrNotToBone · 08/05/2024 21:55

6 and 9 year olds. Meals depend on activities but anywhere between 5 and 7pm. Bed is 8pm on a school night and anywhere between 8 and 9pm at the weekend, later on holidays.

6 year old needs to be dragged out of bed at 8am for school and can easily sleep later than 930 at the weekend so later bedtimes wouldn't work for us. 9 year old is up anywhere between 730 and 8 usually so again I don't think they'd manage a later bedtime without turning in to a grumpy little shit!

DelurkingAJ · 08/05/2024 21:55

8 and 11. Eat with childminder in the week. Bed at 8pm unless they have activities (DS1 got in at 9 from a cricket match this evening). Eat all together at the weekend and during school holidays.

ExcitedButNervous0424 · 08/05/2024 21:57

We eat our evening meal together at 5-5.30pm.

My seven year old goes up at 8 and is asleep by 8.30

My ten year old goes up at 9pm and is asleep by 9.30

LapinR0se · 08/05/2024 21:58

6 and 9 here.
dinner is around 6.30, they eat with the nanny during the week and with us a bit later at the weekends.
Bed is 8 but they faff an awful lot. The 6 yr old sleeps between 8.30-9 and the 9 yr old by 9.30.
Both up at 7 for school.
