What do you mean when you use the 'thanks' button?

Obviously sometimes it's 'thanks' but I also use it like a Facebook 'like' if someone has said something funny....

just me

I'm guessing you use the app, it baffles me why anyone uses it when the functionality is so poor

Because although (and I've just tried..) when I log in via the Web page, it defaults to the app. So here I am.
Never had any real issues. Just sad to miss out on a like button. I'll delete the app and try again.

familyissues12345 · 08/05/2024 18:15

I keep getting "You've been thanked" emails yes I'm smug. I'm assuming it's only on the website as I can't see the option on the app SadGrin

alloverthewaves · 08/05/2024 18:18

Is this only on the webpage rather than in the Mn talk app? I wish they did have a like/thanks button in the app!

Theredfoxfliesatmidnight · 08/05/2024 18:21

I use it when I agree, if they've said something funny, or if they've put what I want to say better!!

I am a MASSIVE thanks ho though, I must have thanked every poster on here about a million times each 😁

ALongHardWinter · 08/05/2024 18:26

I use it if I agree, find it funny or just showing appreciation for information.

Kangarude · 08/05/2024 19:21

Sorry @mathanxiety I never use the app so I didn’t realise Blush

SuspectedInsomniac · 08/05/2024 19:25

To mean 'like'.

I think it would be far more useful as a like rather than a thanks button.

A thanks ho 😅😘

I use it when I agree with the points the poster has made.

I hate the fact it’s called a “thanks” button. What are we actually thanking them for?

It should be “like” button.

And there should definitely be a “This really made me laugh” option.

ToriTheStoryteller · 08/05/2024 20:05

99% of the time for me it's accidental, it's just that I happen to be scrolling the page up and my thumb hits a random post. I don't bother correcting it as it might make someone happy.😀

LindorDoubleChoc · 08/05/2024 20:06

Is it ok to say I've never used it or will I get some snippy reply back?

I have no idea what it's for and have been 👀to receive email notes from HQ about "thanks" given to me, which I have of course now switched off.

I don’t use it at all since learning you can use it to track name changes.

Oh dear. I am a chronic name changer !

Serencwtch · 08/05/2024 20:40

Depends on the context. In most cases it's a 'like' as in agreement but otherwise a genuine 'thanks' for posting where a 'like' would be inappropriate. If someone has posted something really personal or shared an awful experience it would feel odd to 'like' the comment but 'thanks' more appropriate.
I really like that no one else can see how many 'thanks' someone has. It takes away the popularity contest in other social media.

Good move Mumsnet HQ

That's weird,

I know websites sometimes ask if you want to move to an app if there is one but I've never had it happen automatically.

Yup, it did. I've deleted the app and on the website now. Fully functional and able to thank people 😁

FormerlySpeckledyHen · 09/05/2024 07:58

Thanks, like or agree.

Can you? How so?

NotJohnMajor · 09/05/2024 08:01
  1. Thank you for answering my question/posting a detailed and informative reply/sticking up for me/making me laugh.
  2. I strongly agree with you.
Lilly11a · 09/05/2024 08:02

So on here I use it usually when someone says something going against the grain of the thread that I agree with .

Ie thank you for pointing out everyone else's collective madness .

Oddly enough my 👍 use on teams and WhatsApp which is the closest to thanks ideally means " information acknowledged " and ❤️ is thank you

Lurkingandlearning · 09/05/2024 08:13

All the above.

It’s good for people who might be shy of posting but I hope it doesn’t replace posts, even the short ones because they all add to the dialogue and I bet some of the posters who are very witty and funny enjoy getting the 😂😂😂 I would if I was witty and funny

Mrsjayy · 09/05/2024 08:17

Spirallingdownwards · 08/05/2024 15:45

Is this correct and where did you find this out?

And also thanks!

Nobody can track anything the "thanks" just goes to you regardless of name changes the thanks are private.

I just use it to like what the poster said. I don't like using it if someone has said something serious that I sympathise with because it seems a flippant thing to do.

CurlewKate · 09/05/2024 09:58

What do you do when you've been thanked? I wish there was a "You're welcome!" button!
