How many emails are in your work inbox?

I tried really hard to keep mine tidy in my new job, but it’s at 462 right now.
I might try and file them all.

I’m nosey, what’s normal? Does everyone else manage to keep it to unread only?

Unread about 100. In total, I have no idea.

Badburyrings · 08/05/2024 16:04

Currently have 1 but last week it was over 2000. I was screen sharing and a colleague commented and I decided to tidy it up, it didn't take long as the things I needed to read had been read. The outstanding ones were just meeting acceptances, standard newsletter type stuff. I am now trying to keep on top of it and deleting this type of stuff the moment it drops.

I’m trying, but don’t know what to do with ones that still need attention. How do you handle those?

Depends on the system you have - we use MS 365 and you can add flags / reminders / mark when complete/ dates to complete to emails which helps work through the list. I also have an email folder that is for urgent / non urgent that I move emails to and then work through the urgent one first by date

mrsbyers · 08/05/2024 16:06

14 when I switched off yesterday , non working day today so expect about 100 when I log back on most of which will be quickly filed away as cc’d a lot for info

Deary me, some of these numbers suggest terrible corporate retention policies for emails. Where I work, anything that's over 12 months old is automatically deleted.

My own work mailbox is always at 0. I action all emails as soon as they come in, or move them to a sub-folder and create a linked task if there's something more complex that needs to be done. I move any emails I might need for future reference to a secure folder.

GinandGingerBeer · 08/05/2024 16:07

Work: None unread. God knows how many in the deleted items.
My personal email though has 156,781 and that's just the inbox. BlushGrinBlush

I'm a filer because the search function on outlook is shite and never works as it should, so 15 currently that need actioned by me / others.

But you can still search if they are filed - when you put into the search box you just click all files.
by creating files and moving emails to them (or setting up so key words always move certain emails to those files) it makes the inbox more manageable - although it sounds like you are already on top of things 😀

But why bother? It just makes extra work for no reason. I don’t have time to over complicate work because it’s what people used to do versus searches improved.

macshoto · 08/05/2024 16:15

24,667 unread and a total of 45,614 Smile

beeswain · 08/05/2024 16:26

Healthcare - I try very hard to end each day with nothing unread, even if it's only briefly read and flagged and filed for action the next day. I have 58 folders to file things that need keeping. I don't get that many emails a day - maybe between 100 and 150.

BillStickersWillBeProsocuted · 08/05/2024 16:28

You searchers are far braver than I!

Even if the searches were flawless (which they definitly aren't!) Surely most people have common names and there's not always something unusal to search for - don't you often get 100s of false positives?

Figroll16 · 08/05/2024 16:29

2 😂 but I'm obsessive about keeping my inbox tidy!

Moodykat · 08/05/2024 16:35

I started my new job filing my emails religiously. Now I am just happy if none are showing as unopened!

I have 4960, with probably the same again in files that no longer mean anything!

Redglitter · 08/05/2024 16:38

3

Ones from a hotel I'm making a booking with so that'll be replaced later with booking confirmation

An e voucher code

A reminder that I need to update my new debit card details to an account so that'll be gone shortly

I couldn't stand to have 100s let alone 1000s

I’ve never had one I can’t find with a search, there might be a few the same but it’s easy enough to just look at the dates or subject etc to see which one i need.

WhatHaveIFound · 08/05/2024 17:14

156 in mine after a spring clean last week. DH has close to 2000 and can never find a thing.

spanieleyes · 08/05/2024 17:29

44,879. All read

I have started on the task of thinning them out!
