The appeal of Robinsons/ squash - explain it as if I was an alien

Ok this sounds nuts but I was just talking to my American next door neighbour who was horrified at the whole idea of squash or cordial. I didn't realise it's just not a thing in the US. She thought it was mad that you put some liquid in the bottom of a glass then fill it with water. They have these gross-sounding super sugary powders instead. Anyway we fell about laughing because she said I'd failed to sell it to her. So do your best
tell an American why Brits give their families orange squash

....go!

Because it’s much more affordable than fresh juice. It’s lasts longer.

Hoppinggreen · 07/05/2024 20:18

It makes water taste nice.
I send it to my friend who moved to The US

OperationalSupport · 07/05/2024 20:18

It’s more refreshing than juice, but tastes nicer than water. Not terrible for teeth (as long as it’s sugar free) unlike fizzy drinks.

But Vimto is better than robinsons any day.

reluctantbrit · 07/05/2024 20:18

I am German and can't find any reason to buy Squash. We buy juice and mix it with sparkling water. As everyone in the family drinks it, the juice doesn't get off.

thenewaveragebear1983 · 07/05/2024 20:19

I find it quenches my thirst more than plain water. If I’m really thirsty I will always have a squash.
tell her about hot squash, it will blow her mind 🤣

DancingWithYouInTheSummerRain · 07/05/2024 20:21

It's cracking for a hangover!

Theothername · 07/05/2024 20:21

It’s purely a nostalgic taste for me- objectively revolting like most of the food of the ‘80s but curiously comforting.

refreshingseahorse · 07/05/2024 20:23

The US has Kool-Aid, Crystal Light, etc. Same but powder instead of liquid.

Delia123 · 07/05/2024 20:24

More convenient than weird American powders that have to be mixed.

Precipice · 07/05/2024 20:28

I can't see any. I like juice (from concentrate; actually not so much 'super fresh).

A friend (foreign) recently bought something that suggested it should be diluted on the label. It wasn't brilliant in either form, but much better without any water added. I think of squash as the same, but then it's still a not very nice juice.

museumum · 07/05/2024 20:30

It’s just flavoured water. What’s not to like?
when I worked American summer camp kids drank gallons of “gator aid” not the type we get here, just like squash really but made with powder.

I was just going to say this, .so I don't know why they would be baffled by squash because the powders do the same thing.

Laiste · 07/05/2024 21:13

I don't understand what's not to understand about flavouring water Confused

I like hot ribena in winter. Not too strong. And it must be in one of our big glass cups Smile

Oooh hot squash. or hot diluting juice as we call it up here. Nothing better than hot orange squash to dip ginger nut biscuits in

MsMuffinWalloper · 07/05/2024 21:42

Robinsons is horrible due to the "sugar free" rubbish. Ribena or M&S own juice/anything that says "no artificial sweetners" are the squash kings.

Great way to stop dehydration if you can't afford a pint of freshly squeezed OJ every time the teen opens the fridge.

I reminded my friend about hot ribena when he had a streaming cold the other day. He was actually moved to tears with gratitude!
*In hindsight it could have been the cold...

SwedishEdith · 07/05/2024 21:47

The French have sirop which is much the same thing but somehow acceptable for adults to order in a bar.

Key ingredient of Snakebite Black, no? 😉

And Pernod and black back in the day.

Two great reasons for squash right there!

I once read that sipped throughout the day it's essentially as bad for your teeth as a fizzy drink. I'm always horrified by children sipping it constantly at school. I wonder if it's not as bad as I think though? Are there kids who drink it several times a day with no dental issues at all?

I’m pretty sure ribena contains sweeteners now, it’s definitely not the same as it used to be.

JanglingJack · 07/05/2024 22:01

It makes water taste better,

But not as much as syrup de Cassis or strawberry or whatever does in France, because it's the pure joy of watered down sugar 😂

I've gone off squash now it's all no added sugar. I can taste the aspartame. So if I do buy a squash it will be a hi juice. I don't like watered down fruit juice either.

That probably didn't help the alien. They should try things for themselves... Coming down here, slagging off our squashes 🤣

Ribena has changed and it's a travesty.

Pinkbendyman · 07/05/2024 22:02

Vimto or Ribena for me - hot in the winter and ice cold in the summer.
