Do You Buy Magazine ?

LuluBlakey1 · 06/05/2024 13:32

I am asking because it came up in conversation with a group of friends who were all surprised when I said I never buy magazines. They all buy a couple at least, regularly. I literally never even think of looking at or buying a magazine.
DH gets about 3- a History one, one from his union about 'School Leadership' and he gets Private Eye. I might look at those because they are there but nothing else.
If you do, what do you buy and why? What do you spend a month on magazines?
One of my friends reckons she spends about £30 a month on house magazines.

I love magazines and used to buy Red, Grazia, Marie Claire, Easy Living …

I feel that I am a bit in no man’s land now regarding magazines. Im too young for good housekeeping and woman and home and Red feels a bit of a younger, hipster type read.

If Easy Living stuck around I probably would have kept reading that.

I’m 46 btw

Im almost 51 and Red does feel too young for me now. Woman and Home feels about right

Edited

I’ll give it a go so, really would love if they brought back easy living

I also subscribe to readly.

it can have up to 5 profiles so the whole family can access what they want for £8 a month. I think its mainly me that reads stuff on there but even so it not much more than buying 1 glossy mag a month. I used to buy lots more before

I enjoy W and Home or prima. They pricey though 8 euro in dublin. I like bella too. My friend buys Hello so we swap them. So a few reads

I bought a Sunday paper this weekend, with magazine. The weather was vile and I fancied doing the crossword and other puzzles.

I hardly ever have a feet-up weekend, so it was a treat. 😊

Beezknees · 07/05/2024 13:24

No, I used to though as a teen. I read Heat and Cosmo religiously.

I subscribe to 3 home/interiors mags and have done for 20 plus years. Prices have gone up a lot (esp when you buy individual issues) but I absolutely love them! Having done up 14 places, it's been much cheaper than hiring a designer and I've learned loads, but it's a passion of mine anyway.

I don't buy other magazines (or TV guides) other than once in a blue moon. My mum and ex mil buy things like Woman and Home/Good Housekeeping (plus different interiors mags to mine) and I enjoy reading those too. It's easier to find time to pick up a magazine for 10 mins - I love reading books but hate having to keep putting it down.

Despite always buying clothes etc secondhand, I would have to starve before I'd give up my magazines. Ridiculous perhaps, but they're great escapism in the middle of renovations - which take years with a tiny budget.

I used to buy so MANY magazines each week, when I was younger..All them Elle, Graziaa, Cosmos, New Woman, Glamour etc..
i have an app now where I pay monthly fee and I have access to most magazines in the world for free..love specially the US and Australians mags.

Treelichen · 13/08/2024 09:58

I have Apple News+ so I read several on my iPad. I haven’t bought a physical copy for years.

MoodEnhancer · 13/08/2024 09:58

I far prefer reading on paper rather than devices. But magazines are an expense I can no longer justify. I will buy one every so often, though. Usually Private Eye, the Economist or the New Yorker. It feels like a treat. But the magazines I buy most often are those awful children’s magazines which usually come with a crap toy for my DD! Only for long trips by train or airplane though. They keep her entertained for an hour or two and I figure it’s better than her being on a screen for the whole journey.

Blackcats7 · 13/08/2024 10:03

Not since the nineties/ early 00.
I used to buy decorating/home magazines, cat and horse magazines.

ArseInTheCoOpWindow · 13/08/2024 10:09

Used to buy all the glossies when l was a fashion student.

Never buy any anymore. Not interested in glossies.

Fudgetheparrot · 13/08/2024 10:09

I had a subscription to Psychologies until recently but it started to get a bit samey. I do occasionally get Take A Break as a guilty pleasure when I do the food shop- I love the mad stories 😂

susiella · 13/08/2024 10:22

I have a subscription to Period Living and buy Horse and Hound most Thursdays. I recently revived a Private Eye subscription but cancelled it after about 3 months as I was sort of forcing myself to read them. Which was daft.

Jojoanna · 13/08/2024 10:52

I used to love a magazine Jackie ,17, Cosmo, the Lady, Elle , Red ! I feel inspired to go and buy one now.

PerkyMintDeer · 13/08/2024 10:56

I was going to treat myself to some yesterday but they were more expensive than books.

Then I also remembered I have Readly!

AdoraBell · 13/08/2024 10:58

Not anymore. I used to buy National Geographic quite frequently, also fashion magazines when I was in my 20’s.

yetanotherusername9183837 · 13/08/2024 11:12

I love magazines, and digital versions are not the same at ALL.

I have a Spectator subscription and also buy Private Eye. Then occasionally as a treat I buy something very different to my stressful London job, eg Good Housekeeping, Country Life, Coast, Good Food or Olive.

Occasionally I like Red but beauty articles bore me and there are often several pages of them so that feels like a waste of money.

Sgtmajormummy · 13/08/2024 11:13

DH gets a weekly crossword magazine and I occasionally pay a one-off to the Guardian online.

If there’s a cute patchwork pattern or gadget I might buy that and I have copied online shopping discount codes like PRIMA10% which I consider free for all.
