Should I kill the ants or give them a chance?

Last year we had a problem with ants in the kitchen. I put down little gel traps which seemed to resolve it but I felt sad that it meant killing loads of ant.
Anyway, I've just noticed a couple of ants near the back door in the kitchen. Ive brushed them out but worried it's going to be a problem again.

Should I get the trap down asap or wait to see if they take over the kitchen again?

The scouts are out. I'd stick a trap down.

I alao don't like killing things. We had a few ants in the hall a couple of weeks ago (at any one time I'd see about 3-5) but I decided to watch and wait, made sure it was really clean (no crumbs etc) and after a few days they stopped coming.

I don’t kill them - we need all the insects we can get.
I keep lids on everything and put sweet things like jam and honey jars in lidded bowls .

I once read that ants only come in the house if they're desperate and starving. I found the path in and put some sugar or honey in their path outside so they had no reason to go further. It worked!
