Beach recommendations somewhere 'near' Carlisle?

Staying with family but fancy a few hours on the coast, walking on the beach and maybe having an ice cream or fish & chips?

Don't know the area at all though, and don't want to drive too far. Any suggestions for where's pretty?

Don't want to ask family as it might seem like we're desperate to get away, even though we are! Gonna go for groceries and get spur of the moment sidetracked!

St Bees. You can catch a train if you prefer.

Silloth on the solway firth west of carlise is a funny little seaside town which when I was last there (1998) was one of the strangest places I had ever been. Very quiet but also interesting and felt like a time warp. Fish and chips and ice creams available.

The beach at Allonby is nice, although haven't been for a few years. Then head to Silloth for fish & chips/ice cream. We used to sit on the green in the town centre with our chips. there's playground if you have little kids and a good splash park (but not sure if open yet), and a small amusement arcade.

We used to go to Silloth for family holidays, a very odd place😲
