Just that really. I'm in a hotel room on reluctant business, about to go to sleep (so sorry if I'm slow to reply), and I've got my favourite book - The Shipping News - with me as a sort of comfort blanket, of sorts.

I've probably read it about 10 times now, but always love it. It just never gets old for me.

I'd love to know what other people have as their all-time favourite book!

Ladder of Years by Ann Tyler.
Cold Comfort Farm by Stella Gibbons.
Great Expectations by Charles Dickens.
Ballet Shoes by Noel Streatfeild.
Wolf Hall/Bring Up the Bodies and Beyond Black by Hilary Mantel.
A Wizard of Earthsea by Ursula K LeGuin.
The Secret Diary of Adrian Mole aged 13 3/4 by Sue Townsend.
Dissolution by CJ Samson.

Sorry, I couldn’t pick just one!

Ooh good one.

LOTR.

But if I could have a second bite at the cherry it would be The Silver Brumby.

In recent years “The Heart’s Invisible Furies” by John Boyne, for many years Anthony Burgess’ “Little Wilson and Big God”.

Busman's Honeymoon by Dorothy L Sayers. Actually, I haven't read it since the spring. I think I'll get it out (again)
