NI number issue

DS will be 16 at the end of this month and we haven't received any notification about his NI number. I do receive child benefit so presumed it's would come automatically.
Should we have been contacted by now?

Yes. It usually comes a few months before.

dementedpixie · 04/05/2024 22:41

They normally send a letter with it on a couple of months beforehand.

Did your ds have a child trust fund? The unique reference number on that is their NI number. Has the format AB123456C

Have you moved address in the last few years

If he can sign up to his personal tax amount with HMRC, he can access his NI number from there.

My daughter turns 16 next week and her NI letter arrived last week.
So his should be coming soon I expect.

mrsnjw · 05/05/2024 10:18

We lost the letter 🙄. @dementedpixie oh I wondered if that was his ni number but wasn't sure! In the end we logged onto HMRC to find it but you will need passport etc for proof of identity. It was a faff!

Needmorelego · 05/05/2024 11:02

@mrsnjw I expect lots of letters will get lost. Why they can't send a card like they used to.
A plastic card will last forever - an A4 piece of paper won't !
(That has just reminded me to get some laminating sheets because I am going to laminate my daughter's....and photocopy it and laminate that one too 😂)

Committed to the 30 min wait on hold to HMRC who confirmed our correct details are on file but sometimes numbers just aren't issued as they should be. Apparently it's DWP responsibility but HMRC will send it now. Glad I chased it up!
