A long shot here but has anyone managed to reset a suitcase PIN code?
or break into a suitcase?

my mum offered to put the dress in her back and my heels and can’t remember the pin, I am screwed!

Huge misunderstanding of probability here.

If there are 3 numbers, the combination of those 3 in any order is vast.

Anyone saying they got lucky fast were just that- lucky.

Wickedgreengirl · 05/05/2024 10:18

If you can get hold of a TSA key you’ll get it open. That little key hold above the numbers takes a universal key so that airport workers can search a case without breaking the lock. Amazon sell them, just get one that matches the TSA number by the lock.

LadyLavinia · 05/05/2024 10:22

In your photo, there is a keyhole above the number pad. It appears to be stamped TSA 007. Just go to any store that sells individual luggage locks with keys; they are relatively inexpensive (at least here in the states). Make sure the lock you purchase has the same TSA number as your suitcase.
The hotel front desk may even have one available.
Good Luck!

Not really. There are 1000 possibilities on a 3 digit lock. Do it in front of the TV and surely that would take 2 hours max.

Yep- just do 10 mins here and 10 mins there (write down what number you've checked up to) and you'd have it done quickly. Better than breaking a perfectly good suitcase

Rightsraptor · 05/05/2024 12:25

I've tried to pick a Samsonite lock before now with the help of You Tube.

It didn't work.

But fortunately it was a soft-sided case and we could cut it open. It had to be binned though.

DaisyHaites · 05/05/2024 12:39

It’s a TSA approved lock so actually quite easy to open… if you have the right tools.

Maybe google how to open TSA lock.

Mnk711 · 05/05/2024 13:00

Did uou get it open?

GasPanic · 05/05/2024 13:06

The way some people talk on here you'd think you were trying to break into Fort Knox.

It's a crappy suitcase lock and yes Samsonite are one of the better brands but it isn't going to withstand being levered open with a big flat bladed screwdriver.

Alternatively if you don't want to wreck it you can get a TSA key or alternatively try every combination.

The number of combinations is not "vast" - I mean the number of configurations of a Rubiks cube might reasonably be described as vast. It's a relatively low 1000. So if you try one every 3 seconds it will take you less than 1 hour.

504 possible combinations with 3 digits 0-9

How did you work that out?

No, you’ve misunderstood it.

There is 000 and then every number from 1-999.

That is 1000.

No need to work out the probability of each number and then multiply them all up or whatever you’re doing. It should still give you 1,000 though, but I guess you’ve done it wrong. (It’s just the number of options for the first digit, 10, times by the next, 10, times the next, 10. Which is 1000. This is because each one is independent, so it’s a simple calculation. )

MyFirstLittlePony · 05/05/2024 14:38

Can you ask her if she had to choose a number now, what would she choose?

Most people’s brain follow a predictable pattern, eg my go to is always my mum’s birth date

Otherstories2002 · 05/05/2024 14:14

How did you work that out?

9 x 8 x 7 = 504 which is wrong as it assumes each digit is only used once and there are no zeroes.

As has been said already, it's 10 x 10 x 10=1000, a 4 digit code would be 1000 x 10 = 10000!

I saw a film once (I might even have been in it!) where they used a small amount of plastic explosive to open a locked suitcase.

Could you ask at Reception if they can let you have some. If they say they don't have any, leave a scathing report on TripAdvisor.

That's what I would do.

I'm thoroughly enjoying all the posts about how many possible combinations of numbers there are on a three-digit suitcase lock.

Pippa246 · 05/05/2024 14:54

Also need to know if the case was opened!!

why are people suggesting bolt cutters?? Genuine question - There’s no bolt to cut 🤔

Not really. It can only possibly be 000-999. So 1000 different possible numbers. That's doable.

I think you could do it within 90 minutes assuming you took no longer than 5 seconds on each attempt.

1000 x (5/60) = 83 minutes and 20 seconds maximum and you could do it a lot quicker.

Of course you'd have to do it systematically: 001, 002, 003 ... up to 997, 998, 999 if necessary.

Yeah that’s why I questioned as it’s obviously wrong.

You can have 000 to 999. There are only 1000 possibilities. I've done this and it's quicker than you think.

Chemenger · 05/05/2024 15:28

I had this problem a couple of days ago. It took about 10 minutes going through each number from 000 to the correct one which turned out to be in the last 20% of the 1000 possible numbers. It’s not a big deal.

it took you 10 mins to input 800 combinations?
