Has anyone else not been abroad in years?

It's been 9 years for me. Due to a mixture of money (and taking on a mortgage and ploughing money and overpayments into that), and changing jobs quite a few times so not planning ahead too much. I've been on holiday once in the UK in that time.

I'm not sure when I will go abroad again.

I’m 44 and never been abroad.

I’ve only had a full weeks’ holiday twice in my adult life. Both to Butlins when the kids were younger, but usually we just had Mon-Fri caravan breaks.

I’ve been on a few 2 night city breaks and we rented a holiday let for 4 nights in Scotland for our honeymoon.

Holidays abroad always seemed to be what other people did. I grew up poor so I find it hard to get out of the mindset that it could be for me too.

I’m expecting a bit of an inheritance soon so really hoping to put any fears/concerns aside and go on the holiday of a lifetime.

I haven't been abroad for over 21 years, since I was with my ex from back then

I haven't been abroad since 1991. Before that I travelled a lot and even lived overseas. Then it all dried up due to finances, animals, family etc. Now I'm in my sixties I'm worried about travel insurance and as a widow I've got nobody to go with.

19 years since we went abroad, cannot say I miss it, especially with the cost of holidays now.

Add into the mix a Disabled Child and the thought does not spark joy into me.

Not since 2001 (honeymoon) for me.
Ivf, then 1st child in 2004, 2nd child 2007 then I became disabled then it was clear both kids had Autism. Then exH buggered off & left me to it so no £ or time. But I'm hoping for a last min trip to Malta this year if I can find it 🙏

8 years, but live in a tourist Area of sw France. Biggest obstacle is no longer having a car.

It's been nearly 8 years for me. Going to menorca this summer though!

Have had plenty of holidays in UK in that time which I also love.

About 10 years for me, financial reasons

SheSaidSheCouldButSheLied · 13/01/2026 20:54

My husband and I haven't been abroad for 8 years - lack of money, serious health problems, then retirement (even more lack of money) stopped us. We are going this year - paying for it in instalments.

WineBeforeWhine · 13/01/2026 20:55

6 years for me - since my husband died. I just can’t build up the confidence to do it.

Last time abroad was 2019. DH got cancer and then with covid we couldn't go in 2020 nor 2021, and now he's immunocompromised and on lifetime chemotherapy we can't go abroad now anyway.

Prior to that we went abroad at least 3 times per year ever since we met in 1987, and at the last count I remember, I think we racked up over 40 countries including Egypt, Canada, USA, Jordan, Israel, Turkey, Gambia, Kenya, Russia, and all round the Med and Europe, including skiing and golfing holidays and a couple of cruises.

It's very sad that we know we won't go abroad again because of DH's cancer/treatment, but at least we filled our boots in the 30+ years we were together before his diagnosis. We're very grateful we "lived for today" rather than deferring things in the hope/expectation we'd do them later in life/in retirement. Sometimes, tomorrow never comes!

25 years for me. Not by choice but broke after my exH walked out & with 2 Autistic kids. I hope to travel this year but I've really lost my confidence.

I see I posted upthread here in 2024. I did in fact book a trip then (which was due to leave 7 days later) I was SO excited. Within 24 hours of booking it, my Ds went into heart failure. He's still with us which is the most important thing, but we never got our holiday.
