Has anyone else not been abroad in years?

It's been 9 years for me. Due to a mixture of money (and taking on a mortgage and ploughing money and overpayments into that), and changing jobs quite a few times so not planning ahead too much. I've been on holiday once in the UK in that time.

I'm not sure when I will go abroad again.

19 years since we went abroad, cannot say I miss it, especially with the cost of holidays now.

Add into the mix a Disabled Child and the thought does not spark joy into me.

RuthW · 04/05/2024 08:45

I last went abroad in 1989. I have no intention of ever leaving the UK again.

RaininSummer · 04/05/2024 08:48

Actually I haven't had anything people would think of as a holiday in over 25 years. Been to a festival for 3 days for past three years and three days in a British city twice. Not particularly bothered by that either. Do days out in local beauty spots when off work .

Bluevelvetsofa · 04/05/2024 08:48

In 2008. Its just too expensive.

Elephantswillnever · 04/05/2024 08:50

I’ve not been abroad for 12 years and I travelled a lot in the past. Kids, mortgage, dog going abroad just seems really expensive

Alwaystired23 · 04/05/2024 08:51

Yes, the last time we went abroad was to Disney Land, Paris, in 2019. Then we had covid, and just kind of stopped. We have been on various UK breaks, which I love. However we have booked to go to Ibiza this summer. We've splashed out and upgraded to a swim up room for the dc. Then I think I'll start saving to take them to Florida.

Coastalcreeksider · 04/05/2024 08:53

2005 Las Vegas.

Usually I didn't have either the money, someone to go with or the time off to go but I am retired now and definitely have both the time, someone to go with and the money to go overseas if I wanted to.

I just don't feel I want to.

I'm ok with that though. 😀

Crunchymum · 04/05/2024 08:53

It's been 10 years for me (2014).

This is mainly down to the fact I went part time after DC2 (and we also had DC3). So yeah a combination of 2 maternity leaves and halving my salary means we just don't have the money for holidays abroad. We do however have a few UK breaks each year. We have relatives in Scotland so are able to visit as and when.

We also don't currently run a car (too expensive) but these sacrifices have been worth it to allow me to be at home with our young family.

Albatrosssss · 04/05/2024 08:56

We haven't - have an autistic DC who can just about handle a few days away to visit family in a familiar place. I don't really mind, it's very expensive to go abroad and overpaying our mortgage (instead of spending on things like holidays) allowed us to move to a much better house, so being at home is pleasant.

Oblomov24 · 04/05/2024 08:59

I go probably twice a year because it's a priority for me. It's all about choices, other posters above are overpaying mortgage, we don't, ours is coming to an end. It also depends what you class as expensive, We find cheap trips AI to Portugal or Majorca. Many people above talk of having dogs, but that is a cost, vets bills particularly, so it does all come down to choices.

ItsSerious · 04/05/2024 09:00

Last time was probably Paris on the Eurostar 5 or 6 years ago. I don't really care for travelling. I'm autistic and there are too many things that could go wrong (noise etc.) and make the experience dreadful.

Witchbitch20 · 04/05/2024 09:01

6 long years. I love to travel.

I was hoping to go somewhere in May but my mother has started chemo so I’ve stopped looking. It will be at least August before that finishes and then I’m into the very busy time in work. I feel the universe is tell me to stop making plans - every time I think I can fit in a trip something happens.

I long for that hit of sunshine days.

passtheajax · 04/05/2024 09:04

Not since 2008. I'm not well enough to go on a holiday now, so we just have day trips in the area we live in.

Alfreddoeblin · 04/05/2024 09:05

Last abroad in 2016/17. Funnily enough Italy both times. First as a couple which was relatively cheap then with my 2 sons and DPs youngest. Cost almost £4k so not something we can repeat each year. Have been ill with LC since 2020 so not that confident about travelling abroad. Now I’m virtually recovered thinking about maybe next year when DS2 finishes his A levels. We do have a tourer caravan sited in the Dales so we are lucky to be able to have a few weekends away.
As a teenager and young adult I studied languages and loved travelling.

daffodilandtulip · 04/05/2024 09:09

We went most years and were booked for covid year but had a refund. Despite restrictions being lifted, it all started to seem like too much faff to go abroad. We stayed in this country and had two fantastic trips a year, seeing some beautiful places ... but I'm a bit sick of the weather and the prices now.

We're going to Norway this year and then planning a lazy sun/pool type trip for next year. After that, DD will be on her a road year for uni and DS doesn't really like to travel so it may well be our last trip!

BellaTheDarkOverlord · 04/05/2024 09:10

Last in 2019 to a wedding abroad and a family holiday Disney World. Amazing. I’d love to go again but it’s shot up in price and I can’t afford it now. I do want to go again somewhere for a week and take youngest dd who has never been on a plane. Maybe in the next few years. I love flying.

Churchview · 04/05/2024 09:15

Haven't done so for 15 years now. Just got fed up with delays, being herded through airports, the general unpleasant experience of flying, the plastic fork and fake air feeling of planes, the damage to the environment and the cost.

I spend the little money I have trying to make every day nice rather than scrimping by and saving up for two weeks a year that might or might not be worth it.

FuckoffeeBeforeCoffee · 04/05/2024 09:20

Not since 2019 but going to Norway in August and I can't bloody wait!

IvorTheEngineDriver · 04/05/2024 10:00

Weekend break in Munich 2010. Not left the UK since.

Nellieinthebarn · 04/05/2024 10:04

10 years for us, we went on a cruise for my 50th. I thoroughly enjoyed it at the time, but now with the dog and the expense and just the ballache of having to organise everything I'm not bothered about going abroad really. Covid kind of got me out of the habit of thinking about foreign holidays.

Doyouthinktheyknow · 04/05/2024 10:04

We only recently started holidays abroad, I’m 50 this year!

First time I flew was in my mid 40’s!

My childhood was all uk holidays and we did the same for our dses because that’s all we could afford until they were older.

Now it’s just dh and I going, we can afford more and are making the most of it but it’s been a very long time coming.

WeightoftheWorld · 04/05/2024 10:07

Me. 6yrs. We were actually meant to go abroad in 2020 but got cancelled due to covid. Costs of holidays have absolutely soared since everything opened up and now we have 2 DC instead of 1 and tied to school hols so we just cannot afford it.

Things have moved on now - you don't get plastic forks for a start (environmental reasons) actually unless you are long haul or business class you don't need a fork at all 😂

Life is short, if you want to go abroad, I'd stop over paying the mortgage and get abroad whilst you're healthy enough to do so. Assuming you want to of course, but you never know what is around the corner, Covid showed us that. I've never understood the "throwing everything at the mortgage" mentality. Why restrict yourself now to be financially free-er at a time you may struggle to spend the money, there's a balance, and for me that balance is not overpaying the mortgage unless it still leaves me with enough disposable income to enjoy life now (and going abroad is very much part of how I enjoy life).

Totally agree with this !

DatingDinosaur · 04/05/2024 10:14

Not since 2018. Then covid lockdowns struck and abroad travel became confusing/complicated and it was easier initially to have short breaks in England then I realised I prefer the simplicity of that - just pack and go.

The only downside for me is the unreliable weather.
