Has anyone else not been abroad in years?

It's been 9 years for me. Due to a mixture of money (and taking on a mortgage and ploughing money and overpayments into that), and changing jobs quite a few times so not planning ahead too much. I've been on holiday once in the UK in that time.

I'm not sure when I will go abroad again.

I have medical problems that stop me from travelling. Not been abroad since Honeymoon in 2001.

Theedgeoftheabyss · 04/05/2024 10:24

Not been. Climate change etc.

MolkosTeenageAngst · 04/05/2024 10:25

I last went in 2019 so 5 years ago, my passport has since expired and I’ve no plans to get it renewed as no plans to go away any time soon.

thejadefish · 04/05/2024 10:44

Last holiday abroad was 2015. Our flight home got delayed by over 24 hours so we got compensation which ended up being about a third of the cost of the trip! Had DC since and can't quite bring myself to try & travel far with them yet the thought of trying to keep them quiet/not bother other people on a flight, would they get bored once there and would they eat the food plus the cost. One day maybe when they're a bit older...

Passports are a useful form of identification too @MolkosTeenageAngst .

RabbitsRock · 04/05/2024 10:49

6 years ago for us. DD15 is neurodivergent & didn’t cope well with being in a different place/routine, the heat etc. It’s also the cost of living but we hope to go abroad again in the next few years.

Maybe but I’ve not been in a situation where my driving license hasn’t sufficed and I never take my passport out with me anyway whereas my license is with me in my wallet if I ever get asked for ID (which is rare).

Life is short, if you want to go abroad, I'd stop over paying the mortgage and get abroad whilst you're healthy enough to do so. Assuming you want to of course, but you never know what is around the corner, Covid showed us that. I've never understood the "throwing everything at the mortgage" mentality. Why restrict yourself now to be financially free-er at a time you may struggle to spend the money, there's a balance, and for me that balance is not overpaying the mortgage unless it still leaves me with enough disposable income to enjoy life now (and going abroad is very much part of how I enjoy life).

I completely agree with this.

My easy-access savings are less than one month’s net pay, because I prefer to spend my money on travel and experiences instead of squirrelling it all away. I know people who would not be able to sleep at night with such little savings to salary ratio, but I don’t have a problem with it.

I travel abroad at least 5 or 6 times a year.

Newtrix · 04/05/2024 11:09

10 years for us but that's personal choice, we have 3 weeks away in the UK every year plus 2 or 3 weekends. We love this country and exploring it, walking and eating very good food.

Crumpetdisappointment · 04/05/2024 11:13

op this is your life, not anyone else's.
dont compare yourself
do whats right for you

MightyGoldBear · 04/05/2024 11:14

12 years ago for me. I really miss it. Me and my husband have never been abroad together or holidayed at all just us. Even traveling we have never been on a train or bus or boat or taxi together!

It's super expensive with the kids and without. Not that we have anyone who would look after the kids. It's a big regret of mine that I didn't just travel in my twenties and now it seems to impossible and expensive. I really wish we'd atleast been able to have a honeymoon and some romantic holiday memories.

We have family that holidays a lot multiple times a year so its really hard not to get jealous 🙈 especially when it's romantic just the two of them holidays😔

APurpleSquirrel · 04/05/2024 11:22

2019, so 5 years for us. We've holidayed in the UK in that time but really want to go abroad next year. DS wasn't even 1 when we last went, so can't remember it.
Planning to go to Italy next year.

Talkamongstyourselves · 04/05/2024 13:02

I'm 58 and have been abroad 3 times in my entire life. The first time was on a school trip to France when I was 11 (via coach and ferry), the 2nd was in 2011 and the 3rd was last year, both long haul to the same place. TBH I'm not really fussed about holidaying abroad, never have been.

rainbowbee · 04/05/2024 13:08

It's 8 years since I was out of the country although I've travelled within it. It was lack of money, then Covid, and now I'm doing well I have no-one to go with!

CormorantStrikesBack · 04/05/2024 13:09

I caught the train to Lille last year which was the first time I’d been abroad since 2019. I find holidays, especially abroad quite stressful.

HoobleDooble · 04/05/2024 13:13

My passport expires soon and it'll be the 2nd one I haven't used except for ID purposes. Last went away with my ex in 2003. DH and DS haven't even got passports but we've seen a lot of the UK.

AllCatsAreAutistic · 04/05/2024 13:30

Don't put off travelling for too long. You don't know how mobile you will be when you are older.

sanityisamyth · 04/05/2024 13:59

Not since having DS 10 years ago

CommeUneVacheEspagnole · 04/05/2024 14:25

@XelaM was it much hassle with dog passports etc? We've not left due to el doggo and I'm fed up of it.

Darklane · 04/05/2024 14:26

Not since years ago as a student. Rather tour the uk in my campervan with my dogs.

exiledfromcornwall · 04/05/2024 14:30

Just over 5 years, last time was a short break in Porto in March 2019. Then covid hit and during all that my DH became seriously ill and is only just getting back to normal now. We have a trip to Italy booked for September, fingers crossed we will be able to do it.

FunkyMonks · 04/05/2024 14:30

Been 8 years since last was abroad now going soon first family holiday abroad miss going on a holiday I enjoy being able to see different countries and experience different cultures hoping it will continue after this family holiday and hopefully be able to give my DCs the same experiences I had of going to different countries when I was younger.

MargaretThursday · 04/05/2024 14:35

Around 1990 was the last and the only time I've been abroad. A school trip to France. I don't feel I've missed out; there's still plenty of places in the Uk I'd like to go.
