Dog.wimoering nearby

I got in from work at 1.00 and have come to bed.
Every 5 mins or so I can hear a dog sound, not a bark but more of a whimpering low level sound.
Pitch black outside and can't see anything, maybe from a garden that backs onto us.

Anything I can do at this time of night.

Get a torch and have a look see if you can identify where the noise is coming from

Are you sure your neighbours haven't got a new puppy and are trying to get it to self settle?

It's warmer now so they may have windows open when they didn't before.

I have heard it before but when I have gone to bed earlier so just thought a dog was outside waiting to be let in.
It definitely sounded outside but you could be right.

If it hear it earlier again I will go and investigate.

I am guessing there is not much I can do if someone is keeping a dog outside. Things always seem louder in the early hours.
