Why do the contestants buy so many vowels in American Wheel of Fortune?

I'm watching episodes on YouTube and their strategy is totally different to the UK edition.

They buy vowels almost straight away when it doesn't seem necessary.Iin the UK edition people pick off as many consonants as possible before they buy a vowel, od they ever do.

As a kind of protest against the removal of so many 'u' from common words in the English language.
