East Midlands Mayoral election anyone?

Just curious as to how anyone thinks it might go. I live in Ben Bradley's constituency and it could go either way for his local vote but I suspect he might be perceived better elsewhere.
Lots of talk, understandably, about London but for a historically underfunded region this could be an important vote for us here in the east mids.

I doubt he's much better regarded elsewhere. I have heard however he is fairly competent although disliked. Think people vote along national political lines and his vote will be split by the reform candidate

FknOmniShambles · 02/05/2024 19:42

Oh I'm in his constituency too! Only recently moved here so no clue of local politics. Will be watching with interest.

EnglishGirlApproximately · 02/05/2024 20:38

I'm not sure I'd describe him as competent although he talks him up very well. There's a perception that he does a lot locally as he's very visible on social media, but in terms of tangible action there's little to see. The green candidate seems like a good egg if a little naive - promises are easy to make when you know you won't win. I think reform will get a decent vote too.
PCC voting today too and I'd be amazed if the current Tory PCC retains the post considering her driving convictions and the police force going into special measures!

My gosh Ben Bradley is awful! Hope he looses. He did a desperate sounding email drop yesterday.

EnglishGirlApproximately · 02/05/2024 23:32

His FB posts are increasingly desperate too. He knows he won't be voted as MP again so is trying to line up the mayor job to keep his profile high enough for his ambition.

Not heard anyone discuss either election really, no clue what is likely to happen.

Onceuponatimeinalandfaraway · 02/05/2024 23:37

I bloody hope crack den Ben doesn’t get it! Also have the misfortune of having had him since 2019. I don’t know what people see in him but hopefully now the anti immigrant voters are defecting to reform we can have someone better next time.

MrsBungle · 02/05/2024 23:39

When I went to my polling station today it was empty (I’m Newark and Sherwood). I am hoping it is certainly not Ben Bradley.

EnglishGirlApproximately · 02/05/2024 23:47

Very quiet at the polling station here too, there's so little appetite for yet another layer of governance that I think turnout will be very low.

Agree with you about the police commissioner. She didn't get my vote.
I watched the debate on TV for the mayor and chose my vote from that. Be interesting to see the turnout, quite a few coming and going when I went about 4ish.

I agree. We do not need even more layers of bloody government. There’s enough money wasted round here as it is.

TheFairyCaravan · 02/05/2024 23:54

He’s vile.

When I lived in the East Midlands and Marcus Rashford was campaigning for the free school meals for children during the holidays, Ben Bradley came on to my Tory MP’s facebook page saying that they absolutely should not be given any money or vouchers. His reasons for this was because the children’s mothers, not the fathers, just the mothers, would exchange them for drugs and alcohol. He 100% knew this to be true so it was better for the children to have nothing in his opinion.

I can’t stand him. Every time I see him, I want to smash the telly, .

I’m in Leicestershire. When I got to the polling station today, I was surprised that I didn’t get a vote in this election. I queried it, because I was looking forward to voting for anyone other than Ben Bradley, but I was told that the new mayor only covers Derbys & Notts. It appears that Leicestershire has been sacked from the East Midlands, so I wonder what region we are in now?

EnglishGirlApproximately · 03/05/2024 07:47

@TheFairyCaravan hes known as crack den Ben around here after claiming that a lot of people spend benefits on crack dens in a particular area.
The debate was eye opening, some candidates performed better than I expected some worse.

@MuggedByReality I'm sure Leicestershire was originally part of the mayoral region so I'm not sure when that changed.

Same thing for me in Leicestershire. Vote was for PCC only.
