Just so that you are pre warned, OP, ........

I was bitten by a ladybird in the early 1970's. Had to go to the GP, as it sealed to the size of an egg and looked truly horrific. He said it was nothing to worry about and, sure enough, the swelling went down quickly.

Nightblindness · 02/05/2024 19:31

Bloody hell. I was 11 during The Summer Of 76 (since we all seem to be measuring our age that way) and well remember the plague of ladybirds, yet I had no idea they could bite. I am a bit of an insect magnet, in terms of getting bitten, so I will be forever after cautious of picking one up now.

Snooperdoop · 02/05/2024 19:32

They definitely bite. Some time in the mid 90s there was a massive amount of them in the coastal village where my sister lived. There were everywhere; the pavements looked red. I remember one somehow got under the waistband of my skirt and bit me.

Someone said to me 'it's not so much that they bite, but they hold on with their mouths'.

Felt pretty much the same to me.

BloodyAdultDC · 02/05/2024 19:36

Is your tetanus up to date op?

🐞

Could it be that you have the appearance of an aphid?

If so, please post a photo.

Haha. My youngest son loves to tell me that I look rough. He's never mentioned I look like an aphid.

They do bite in hot weather. It's because they are thirsty . It actually is quite a painful nip!!

You are clearly not a sporner.

Otherwise you would have cut it open hoping for baby ladybirds (and pus) to come out.

I'm considering contacting the GP for a check up. I can barely see the bite now, but I'll be sure to describe it.

I thought that you were complaining about the lack of a bite. I'd concluded that you were some sort of sadomasochist!

I am dying laughing at this thread.

Did anyone see the poster on Sporners the other day with a live wasp stuck to her toe?

They were recorded as bitey little things when the UK had a plague of them. Was it in the 70s?

Yes it was. Perhaps they were thirsty so were drinking our blood 🤔
The hot summer of 1976 saw swarms of ladybirds infesting towns and cities across the UK, with many people reporting being bitten by them.

There's a plague of the little spotty fuckers in my bedroom. It's south facing and very warm and I don't know where they're coming from. They're all over one of the windows and drive me mad.

I didn't do that, but I had to visit the same GP when I tried to sharpen my little finger in the pencil sharpener. Does that count? He advanced upon me with a very large needle!!

Monkeybutt1 · 02/05/2024 20:07

I was bitten by one last year, the little fuckers look so sweet and innocent, don't be fooled, their bite hurts!
I wish you well OP, remember to use your dressing gown of doom if the stress of it all is too much 🤣

Those will definitely be harlequins. Normal ladybirds also hibernate indoors individually sometimes, but the harlequins do it in swarms.

longtompot · 02/05/2024 21:00

I've always been worried about one biting me ever since my uncle told they me they did when I was about 12. I'm 52 now, not yet been bitten despite having many land on me. It's always the cute things that are the most aggressive. Robins, wrens, ladybirds...

Damnyourheadshoulderskneesandtoes · 02/05/2024 21:12

They're cute but savage. Like dolphins.

Was it Gaston 👀

TheNoodlesIncident · 02/05/2024 22:33

@DontPlayInMySandbox I also got bitten by a ladybird. It was in my bra.

I was in a minibus with other students so couldn't investigate the awful biteyness going on. I was like the Spartan boy with a fox under his jacket, suffering with a stoic face.

I have kept my secret well for many years but I tell you now, because I Share Your Pain.

NeverDropYourMooncup · 02/05/2024 22:56

MrsDanversGlidesAgain · 02/05/2024 19:21

Robins are aggressive territorial little bastards. Don't be fooled by the cuteness.

Got one who's set up shop in the back garden yelling 'come and have a got if you think you're 'ard enough' at all and sundry, including the useless bloody cat with no teeth or interest in climbing or eating anything that isn't £45/kilo and delivered by a nice man in a van.

Maybe we should remind ourselves that red in nature normally means an angry little bastard?

bagsofbats · 02/05/2024 22:59

When they get cross they ooze yellow goo from their knees #actualfact

AllIWantToDo · 02/05/2024 23:12

I'm a keen gardener and I hate to say it but I've noticed a vast increase in the bitey wee fuckers this year.

DontPlayInMySandbox · 02/05/2024 23:16

I'm learning lots today.
And I don't like any of it. Robins. Wrens. 🐞
Next thing you'll all be telling me, is my new kitten will probably bite me!

Well, I am old and have never heard of a ladybird biting.
Will go for a Google!

I learned this the hard way last year too - I’m nearly 40 and had no idea either.

I found this fucker in my garden.

At least he wasn’t loose in the hoose.
