Brighton or Southend?

I’m planning a day trip to the seaside by train from London. Which is better, Brighton or Southend? Or does anyone have any other suggestions?

If you're taking kids then I'd say Southend. Plenty to do; arcades, Sealife Adventure, Adventure Island, there's a little lagoon area to swim in, the pier train.
