To be worried about a delayed smear test result!!

Jotkaur · 01/05/2024 20:54

Hi I’m very new on this so I hope I dont offend anyone, just very recently I had a smear test 2 weeks from today it all went well and the nurse said things looked good!! So anyways fast forward 2 weeks (in which I have had a terrible amount of anxiety and done tonnes of googling and already diagnosed myself with everything). Basically I’m wondering is two weeks a long time to receive a result or am I overthinking. I’ve had two previous smears which results have come back in a week! I’m worried and unable to function the nurse that carried out the test said they usually arrive in a week which has Made me more paranoid. I’ve rang the surgery a few times and asked nothing! Also spoke to the nurse and she said sometimes they can take longer which is completely normal pleas please please tell me I’m wrong to think something is wrong here??!! Any answers and feedback is much appreciated thanks.

my results have taken 6 weeks to come back and they were all clear sometimes they really do take a little while

Springlysprung · 01/05/2024 20:58

Ours take up to six weeks - current turnaround is slow

UpUpUpU · 01/05/2024 21:05

Mine has just taken 5 weeks. I am sure if they find anything they will call you. My gp called to say I had HPV but no abnormal cells.

Try not to stress. Likelihood is that all is fine

I had a smear on Monday and was told it was currently taking about 3 weeks in my area. I understand the anxiety too, as I am very overdue.

thedendrochronologist · 01/05/2024 21:12

Try not to worry. It not easy.

Mine took ages to come back-6 weeks- and wasn't positive and then another 12 weeks for a colposcopy. And I was so worried.

Cells changes developed very slowly hence why they are so slow.

Doesn't mean it's acceptable service though

Jotkaur · 01/05/2024 21:14

Oh hopefully it’ll all be good for all of us got my fingers crossed x

If anything is wrong you get a call

i never heard anything after my last one- I forgot and months later called the GP and she confirmed it was fine

Jotkaur · 01/05/2024 21:24

I did call the nurse yesterday and she said I’m still within the two week frame and I would worry just yet but she didn’t have any results on the system but said she will look out for me I wonder if it’s just slower then 3 years ago

Trust me when the results are abnormal you hear very quick. I knew my result was abnormal as I got my appointment to have them removed before I got the actual results letter. I heard in about 3/4 days after the test.

Jotkaur · 01/05/2024 21:33

sarahc336 I hope ur ok now well it has been 2 weeks and because they didn’t have any record in the surgery I wonder if it has even been checked yet!!

This isn't always true

I waited 6 weeks for positive results and 12 weeks for a colposcopy which was thankfully negative. The nurse did call me the day before I got the letter though.

There was a typo I in my previous post - apologies for the confusion!

TellySavalashairbrush · 01/05/2024 23:15

I waited about a month for my results . Do you have the NHS app? Test results come up on those Pretty quickly and in my experience usually way before results letters arrive in the post.

Jotkaur · 02/05/2024 01:14

just abit down by all this can hardly sleep now I have received no phone call or anything the nurse said she will look out but nothing I’m presuming it might be bad news as this has never happened before in my experience I always got a normal result after a week surely they must be checking for something else too

You really need to get that anxiety under control. Is it normally this bad?

8 weeks for a smear here and anything up to 16 weeks has been common in the past.

I wouldn't even worry about it. I go for it and then forget about it until the results
It's been over a month sometimes for mine if not longer and they've always been clear

IBegYourBiggestPardon · 02/05/2024 02:35

I had mine back in March. Think I got mine back within 3-4 weeks but was told anywhere up to 6 weeks. All clear. I must remember to book it sooner next time though. I hadn't realised 5 years had passed since my previous one.

Jotkaur · 02/05/2024 07:03

Not always this bad but when it comes down to tests and things I usually worry a lot maybe I will just give over the weekend and it might be here by then it mine and Dh anniversary next week praying that it arrives before then as we have a lovely few days booked away and because I’m waiting I can’t just seem to look forward to anything xx

mindutopia · 02/05/2024 09:05

Do you have the NHS app? Mine popped up on there. I would imagine it would come through sooner than the letter would given royal mail at the moment.

That said, even if abnormal, it's really no big deal. I've had abnormal cells in the past. They very often sort themselves out. I haven't had an abnormal one again since and that was nearly 20 years ago now. My HPV was clear as well on the most recent one.

Jotkaur · 02/05/2024 09:17

Just a slight update the nurse has just contacted me and said my test was normal thank you everyone for supporting me on this lovely thread and all it great comments but everyone please remember to book your smears as this is important xx
