Frustration at work

Anyone else stuck as the middleman?

I work in customer service and often queries need input from other departments like buying before we can progress things. They're a busy team.
I unfortunately have the same customers chasing me regularly so of course I have to chase the other team - I know I'm being annoying but if I don't chase it someone will ask me why I haven't. (Sometimes they're so busy and I can't get a reply so follow up weekly even though I know there's no one able to come back to me, I actually feel really awful doing this but I need to protect myself too.)

I have tried to explain genuinely to some customers but then told you by our team leader I can't just tell them they're too busy to reply, albeit in a nice way. I'm stuck between a rock and hard place - trying to appease one and not annoy the other.

What would you do? Be the pest or look after you?

The buying team needs to respond, however busy they are, someone needs to be responsible for dealing with customer queries. They can't just abrogate responsibility because they're busy. I have a busy job - if I said I was too busy to respond to a colleague I'd be out the door!

@NigelHarmansNewWife thank you, makes me feel better about my chasing lol!
I could even cope with a we can respond by x date but I can't get that either to manage expectations
