He's been having a piercing headache behind one eye and the vision is blurry. Went to the opticians on Monday and they gave him an urgent referral - hospital rang today and they want to see him tomorrow morning. Can't be good can it?? There's a chance it might be a migraine, he was feeling sick too. The pain is all but gone now but still worried.

I know this isn’t helpful but honestly with those symptoms there are lots of things it could be. Has he had an MRI scan? That would probably be the next step. I have had very similar issues on and off my whole life and I have a pituitary issue called PES (partial empty sella) which has caused me hormone deficiencies (oestrogen and cortisol, and prolactin issues) but it’s not cancerous or dangerous. There are lots of treatable things it could be so don’t leap to assuming the worst.

One statistic that really stuck in my head about brain tumours (from when I was preparing some teaching for medical students) was that when there was enough worry about the possibility of brain tumour to do an urgent head scan, they only actually found a tumour about 1% of the time. So you will obviously be worried about the worst case scenario, and that absolutely needs testing for, but it's actually much more likely not to be. Fingers firmly crossed for migraine.
