The best hen dos I have been on were ones that were just ‘a night out’. No airBnB, no deposits, no games of fucking rounders or cocktail making, just a good old night on the piss. Fancy dress always makes it funnier too IMO. But funny fancy dress, no crap 80’s theme where they all buy fluorescent leg warmers.

.lunatics (in my opinion) who spend many thousands of their (often parents) money think another few hundred or so on a weekend in Palma/magaluf/ibiza (delete as appropriate) is just chickenfeed…to many this is the same amount as they spend on their annual holiday (if they’re able to afford one)
If the ‘hen’ (who made up this title??) can afford to spend money on one lavish wedding day-maybe they should foot the bill for the hen weekend as well? They’d soon be booking a happy hour pizza & 2 for 1 cocktails.
And don’t get me started on the ones asking for money was a wedding present!

I've only been to one, not a thing when I got married 35 years ago.

Nice meal in a posh restaurant and a drink or two ( literally)

Best one I've been on was just a day out , the weekends away are too much time and money.

We met in the city at 10.30am for bottomless brunch . We then went to the races. Then we went to a few cocktail bars. Some went home by 10am but the die hards went on the the night clubs . We had the ages of 22 through to 75 and it suited everyone.

Agree with this. Nothing ridiculously expensive or pressured, ability for people to leave early if they need to, and others can stay on if they want. A relaxed, friendly vibe where you can actually chat to people rather than the goal being just to get absolutely hammered.

I did one with my closest friends there was 8 of us we all did a weekend away in a city that was about an hour away by train. We did a dirty dancing master class , local sights plus drinks, food , dancing and quizzes. Not expensive and we had a blast.

I think the mixing of people can be an issue sometimes. I'd do a few smaller bits with different pockets of friends.

The best hen do was a 2 day mini cruise to Hamburg. Cheap as chips, cheesy entertainment for 2 nights on board and an afternoon in Hamburg where we met up with local friends for lunch. There were about 16 on the cruise and the chief bm set up an account that we all paid £20 per month into, it was 30 years ago though

I went on one that was one night in a nice house, cost about £150ish Inc giving someone some money for some food and booze.
Laid back, no embarrassing games, costumes, just 15 like minded folk having a nice relaxing time with some nice drinks and food.

I won’t do them if they involve going abroad and/or taking annual leave

Happyharper · 30/04/2024 13:39

Agree i hate the games. For me a good boozy brunch, maybe an activity like a going to see a drag performer, then optional night out is ideal! Not too much forced fun with strangers.

I think someone should start a thread with what was the worst hen do you've ever been to! I bet there are some shockers!

Bringbackspring · 30/04/2024 16:45

All the ones I didn't go to 😂 Sorry, I know that's not helpful, but I truly hate hen do's (even my own one). If I really had to pick, at a stretch, probably one where we did a bit of a cheeky crafting activity in the afternoon and had a meal at a really nice restaurant in the evening. All pleasant and low key but still fun, stayed local and didn't cost the earth. I would never do a going away one now, that would be a thanks but no thanks.

We had a beautiful lunch in Bath, took boats out on the Avon, and then met the stag party attendees for drinks and a picnic.

Sounds lovely

I always enjoy the ones where you rent a big house together! Really allows room to play games like mr and Mrs etc and also get to know the other girls over a weekend! There’s quieter spaces for people who aren’t loud and don’t want to be thrown into everything.
I’ve been to some fab ones where they have had drag queens come to entertain on the night for a ru Paul theme. Private chefs, another with a pop up bar with freshly made cocktails all night and then a room with a dj and a mini party room! Guests started off glam but soon all dancing in their pjs! Truly ace! Also chuck a hot tub in!

This is what I have arranged as a hen do .

Air BnB and a private chef , mostly relaxing but some fun planned too.

No nightclubs , peni or heavy drinking planned.... been there done that on hen do's a couple of decades ago and now most of us will just want a break and to come home feeling a bit refreshed.

Its interesting to hear what other people prefer :)
