Universal credit want to see the last 6 months worth of statements for my savings account but...

There are no statements 😬

I've been on live chat with the building society who say that because there was no account activity in any of the last 6 months, statements cannot be produced. There was no account activity because it's my emergency car repair fund that I do not touch unless the car breaks or needs replacing!

How do I explain this in a way UC will understand? There is just nothing I can print out to send them. I can't even screenshot because of the website security settings!

(Before anyone comes at me for claiming benefits whilst having savings, it's £2k as an emergency car repairs/replacement fund. I've got a disabled child, I work, and we live rurally, so having no car is Not An Option. Us having no car would cost the taxpayer more than £2k in a matter of months because I'd lose my job and have to claim more benefits!)

To get around the no screenshots issue, just get a friend to take a photo of your phone at the appropriate points. Then send you the photos so you can send them to universal credit.

Yes I get it up on my laptop and then take a picture of the page on my phone.

@BoobsOnTheMoon pay £1 in to generate a statement and withdraw it too if needs must.

My bank is the same - can’t get or download statements in the app. Easily remedied by going on to the laptop and into the actual website - not the app.

It's not to do with using the app. It's because the account literally doesn't have any statements for months when there were no transactions - that's the same on the website. Staff have confirmed to me that they cannot generate a statement for those months. I can print off some sort of activity log for the last 6 months, which shows nothing at all (because there was no activity) but it's not the same thing as a statement with an opening and closing balance which is what UC want to see for each of the last 6 months.

I'm going to send in what I can, along with screenshots of some of the email transcript of the live chat where staff explained that the statements simply do not exist and cannot be generated by their system.

If it's not acceptable I'll try going in to the nearest branch and see what they can do there.

Yes I've done that for April but I can't go back in time and do it for March, February, December, November, and October!

Very defensive! I’m not determined to claim you are making it up, I’m saying it sounds odd because it does! I have a current account and a savings account with nationwide and they’ve both always provided monthly statements and interest is monthly. As I said, go into the branch and see if they can provide anything to help.

I’m with Nationwide and I had a similar issue. I sent my current account statement but all I could get from my savings account was how much money was in there and my address wasn’t on it. I messaged them to explain and I haven’t heard back so presumably it’s okay. I think it’s very intrusive, I don’t mind showing them payments in, but I don’t want to share what I spend money on.

Won't it have a brought forward balance showing a date 6 months earlier?

I only get interest once a year, isn't that normal? I assure you I am not making this up. The only statements that exist are for the months of January 2023 and January 2024, both times because a small amount of interest being paid caused a statement for that month to be generated.

It's also quite normal for banks to prevent screenshots on their app/website. PayPal does the same thing. Though as someone pointed out I could take a photo of the computer screen with my phone and send that. I was so perplexed that I didn't think of that!

And it's Nationwide, if you seem so determined to claim I'm making it up.

Having the same problem with NatWest and UC. UC are asking for statements for the review that NatWest don't have. I've provided them every statement I've got, but the accounts with yearly or missing months they came back and asked for monthly statements for. They've given me 7 days to resolve it! Did you get anywhere with this? Also did the holding the driving licence next to my face picture as requested, alongside providing the licence front and back separately, and they've come back and said they can't accept that either as they can't read the licence details next to my face. This review process has been ridiculously stressful already and still have the phone interrogation to come (that's if I can ever prove to them I can't actually obtain statements that aren't available)!

Ask the building society for a letter stating that they don’t do monthly statements if there isn’t activity on the account. And ask them to print the statements for you

after this move the money elsewhere and shut the account - getting a closure statement and keeping it, to show UC

put the money 💴in another account, such as a high interest monthly saving account from your current account - at least that way you’d get £100 interest and a years worth of statements - rather than £3.50 which is terrible

They want to see any transaction to other banks or building societies - that may have your name upon

sometime people don’t give all the details of every account, but these accounts can be seen if there are transactions to them from another of your accounts

this is why they want each and every month - years ago they just used to accept the paper pass book - as it showed there’d not been any transactions since 2019 but now it’s electronic passbooks aren’t around much
