Driving test

Unashamedly posting here for traffic.

My driving test is later this week.

I'm an older lady, been trying to learn to drive for a few years (health and financial issues keep getting in the way) but I'm finally feeling ready to take my test. I'm doing automatic only, sod adding gears into the mix!

Am quietly shitting myself though, and worried I'll fail because I do something really daft because of my nerves.

Any tips or words of encouragement gratefully received!

My mum took her test at 48 and passed first time. She is still driving at 87! You can do it.

When I took my test, my instructor positioned the rear view mirror just slightly out of position. I could still see everything I needed to but it did mean I had to move my head more to look.

My DD took hers a few months ago. She went in with the view that she was confident in her driving, but could do nothing about the other idiots on the road. If someone else did something that might cause a fail, it wasn't down to her. A sort of what will be, will be attitude. Reduced her nerves considerably. She passed too.

Good luck!

Don't overthink it and remind yourself of all the people you know who can barely boil an egg yet have passed their driving test.

If they can do it, so can you.

Once again, don't overthink it, go with your training.

Bit of a weird one but someone told me not to check the time (on the dashboard), after I had failed three times. I passed that time.

Knackeredhamster · 30/04/2024 08:36

Was just going to say, I talked out loud to myself during my test. Repeated all the instructions from the examiner so he knew I was taking notice.

I did pass, late 30's.

Driver narration!
A police driving examiner told me they teach students to do this. It means the examiner knows what you're thinking about while driving. So talk about what you're doing, what you've seen etc.

Dd did this.
When nervous she naturally becomes more chatty, to fill the quiet more than anything.
So she basically narrated most of her drive.
She passed.

Pretend that YOU are the driving instructor and are teaching the examiner how to drive properly.

So, in your head, even out loud if you want to, just explain everything you're doing, as though you're teaching someone.

"OK, seat belts is on, checking all mirrors, all controls are good, indicator is on, road is clear, it's safe to pull away now"

That sort of thing.

Worked for me.

I passed last week! Have been unnecessarily driving to all sorts of places ever since just because I can! There's nothing I need at Tesco but I'll pop just for a look just because I can Grin
