What's happened to all the screw top lids??

Okay, maybe not all, but me and DH have noticed over the last few months that water and juice bottles with screw top lids now seem to all have an annoying new design. When you unscrew the lid for the first time to release it, part of it stays slightly attached - then when you give it a decent yank to detach it, you're left with pokey-out bits of plastic.

Is it just us?!

It's a thing.
Very annoying!!!
So that both sides stick together for recycling

And I bet it doesn't make much difference in saving the planet.

I hate them. I struggle to open the bottles with those tops so seek out old ones.

CarrotCakeMuffins · 28/04/2024 22:24

You're not supposed to yank it off, its supposed to stay attached.
But yes it is really annoying, and then tricky to get the lid back on straight.
I think the objective is to reduce plastic pollution of the little lids by keeping in all in 1 piece.

I don't like this either! The lid seems to get in the way whilst pouring, splattering the contents over my counter.

Yeah we do normally leave them attached, it can just be hard to actually pour from the bottles sometimes!

The recycling thing makes sense. I was trying to figure out the logic behind designing a lid so it doesn't detach.

I blame the EU. This is why we need Brexit.

VenetiaHallisWellPosh · 28/04/2024 22:40

It's to save sea turtles or something.

I don't appreciate a plastic lid over my face whilst I'm drinking.

🤣

It’s an EU directive to make recycling easier. The lids on their own are too small.

This. But I always recycled the lid anyway which makes it doubly annoying.

thenightsky · 28/04/2024 22:43

I noticed it recently. I put my silicone oven glove on to yank it off.

sarahc336 · 28/04/2024 22:43

It's so the lid gets recycled too op

fashionqueen1183 · 28/04/2024 22:46

I had this with some apple juice this week. So annoying as the lid wont go back on straight. I always recycled it anyway so bottles didn’t drip liquid out.
I’ll just have to yank or cut them off now!

Dartmoorcheffy · 28/04/2024 22:52

This drives me mad. The drink doesn't pour properly. It's hard to drink out of the bottles and if you rip.it off its harder to get back on again as well as stabbing you with the sharp plastic bit too
