Repeated ear micro-suctioning in child

DS is now 13yo, and has had to have his ears micro-suctioned every year or two since he was relatively young.

I've read that children can grow out of this over time, and perhaps this is happening, but very slowly (I'll try to dig out all of the timings and check).

Does anyone have any experience of this, or any advice that might help?

The cycle seems to be that he's OK for a while, then there might be some ear pain or wax-induced hearing loss, then the GP refers him for micro-suctioining. I asked the consultant whether ear drops could help, and (other than olive oil ones prior to micro-suctioning to soften the ear wax), he said No. I don't think swimming particularly helps, as DS is then prone to water getting stuck, and possibly to outer and inner ear infections.

I'd be really interested to see whether anyone else has experienced anything similar, and any hints / tips as well.

I have always been prone to ear wax. Some people just have more waxy ears.

Does he wear swimming ear plugs to help keep water out?

No, he doesn't @SuziLikeSuziQ - I actually thought they didn't work, but do they?
