Do you think some jobs are just for young people?

I want to do something totally different. I have worked in quite stressful roles and I want a happy job.

I’m nearly 50.

My local youth hostel is recruiting. I love the idea of greeting, talking about local activities, practical duties.

I have no recent relevant experience so wouldn’t expect to get far…. But more generally, is this a young persons job? Am I daft ever to consider it?

If you are interested and interested in people then sounds like a good job for any age. Does it have a physical aspect, like cleaning rooms etc?

Yes I think so- general house keeping.

I haven’t actually stayed in the local hostel, only more rural ones (which I have loved). Thinking it over, might be different visitors/atmosphere.

There is a job in a theatre. I wonder if tickets and drinks sales would just be exhausting!!

My friend is mid 40s and does the job you describe in a Youth Hostel - loves it. Definitely not an age dependent role.

Youth hostels aren’t just for young people any more. They’re for everyone! As such, I think working in them is perfectly reasonable at any age as long as you’re fit enough to do the job.

If you want the job then apply for it.

You don't know what the employer is looking for really and different hostels will be different.

You might well be a more reliable prospect than someone in their late teens/ early 20's straight out of school or uni.

Stillfeelyoung · 28/04/2024 09:55

Well I guess it can’t hurt to apply! Thank you.

I suppose if I start applying for things I’d like I might start to see where I need to build up experience.

I think it can be good to have some "proper adults" around in an environment like this when people need some advice/staff need to exercise some authority over a situation which has got a bit out of hand.
