Could you work for a tobacco company

I have honestly never given it a thought before today, but over lunch a fiend told me her husband got a new job with a tobacco company. My instant thought was "nope I couldn't" but I don't think I would feel the same about working for an alcohol company.

A growing tactic to force corporate change is encouraging talent not to work for them. Eg UN chief urging graduates not to work for oil companies.

Do not work for ‘climate wreckers’, UN head tells graduates

That's so interesting.

I’ve an industry colleague who had a very high likeability factor, nice brand, would rank in top ten lists etc. After 20 years in the role, he left to take on a very high-earning new job in the Middle East clearly as a sunset (£££££) role; major question marks over his company’s slavery and climate action track record. And I can see it in social media: his personal brand value has plummeted, because nobody wants to associate with someone who has just blatantly followed the money.

Yes if I had to. It wouldn't be my first choice but if I needed to keep a roof over my family's heads and they were the only ones offering a job then yes I would.
I don't think there's any job I couldn't do. It would only require my situation to be such that I had to.

Yes, I'm an ex smoker.

I would not work for a gambling company though. And it enrages me that there are thousands of adverts/companies encouraging gambling and yet smoking is banned and shameful.

The misery that gamblers can inflict on their families is far worse than smoking imho. No smoker ever spent thousands a week on tobacco or threw away their home.

I would have no issue working for a tobacco company. I do already work in a hated profession though.

Lawyer?
Estate agent?
Investment banker?

Yes because the bills still need to be paid,

No way. Nor a gambling company. Unless I had no choice (which seems pretty unlikely tbh).

Friend has worked for BAT for many many years and they sound like a good employer, I would work for them.

The damage gambling causes isn’t on anywhere near the same scale as that caused by smoking or alcohol. Not even close.

Smoking is heavily restricted because all smoking is harmful. The vast majority of gambling isn’t.
