But, there must be at least 500 must see films!

Hedwig and the Angry Inch

It's got great tunes, great artwork and an intriguing story. There's comedy and tragedy and everything in between.

This is a bizarre one but City Slickers. Not because it is a very good film but it was the catalyst for me becoming vegetarian. I literally went out to the kitchen straight after watching it and removed all meat stuffs and that was that for the rest of my life.
It was the bit at the end of the film when it is clear that all the cattle the main characters have herded across America are off to the abattoir.
I had always felt a bit uncomfortable about eating animals but compartmentalised it and being veggie was not a widespread thing back then, certainly not in my circles anyway.
This silly comedy was my tipping point so I am really pleased I saw it.

The Magdalene Sisters, about the Irish laundry houses for 'immoral' or developmentally challenged women. The last one only closed down in 1996.
I watched it at 19 years old and was utterly haunted, crying myself to sleep that night.

And with this I'm interpreting 'must watch' to mean its an important film that ought to be seen. It's not my favourite or the absolute best film.

My favourite films are:

  • Captain Phillips
  • Jaws
  • Sicario

Yes! I bet you're the same age as me.
Pan's Labyrinth is one I don't think anyone has said.
Oh and Labyrinth with David Bowie.
Plus Dirty Dancing of course!
Not three films that necessarily go together....

Cattenberg · 27/04/2024 17:53

The most original and thought-provoking film I’ve seen in recent years is Parasite. It’ll be a while before I watch it again, though.

Some of my favourite films are Muriel’s Wedding, Amelie, The Talented Mr Ripley, Heathers, and What’s Eating Gilbert Grape?

hurklebum · 27/04/2024 18:17

Paint your Waggon
The Rocky Horror Picture Show
Hot Fuzz
The Yellow Submarine
Mr Stink
Monty Python and the Holy Grail/Life of Brian
Fried Green Tomatoes

I love how subjective this is. Wouldn't it be great if somebody who had the time and the inclination did a casual tally of the most popular, and gave us a top 20? When the thread's been running for a while longer, I mean.
