Do you crave sugar and carbs when you come on?

I’ve eaten utter crap today and I’m still hungry! First day of period and I’ve had two chocolate twists, three biscuits and a pot noodle! I did eat a pear so not all bad but How grim!! How do I manage the first day of period better?
does anyone else get like this?!

Yes, and in the days leading up to it.

mylittleyumyum · 26/04/2024 15:36

Yes, I ate three meringue nests (over the sink) yesterday then took an unexpected period last night. Peri sucks.

USaYwHatNow · 26/04/2024 15:54

For about a week before my period starts my stomach feels like an empty pit. Like I can literally empty the cupboards and still be hungry.

chocotwist · 26/04/2024 15:57

Actually thinking about it the last few days of eating weren’t much better lol. Not great for the diet :(

I saw a lady on TikTok who claims that women need more calories, particularly carbs in the week leading up to their period to build more progesterone. Now, I’m not entirely sure of the scientific validity of this statement but I am more than happy to believe it 😁

Whatdoyouseeplease · 26/04/2024 16:04

Absolutely!! And as you say it's all carbs and sugar!

elliejjtiny · 26/04/2024 16:09

Not while on my period but definitely the week before. Also go to the loo a lot in the week before too so I start my period exhausted from being woken up 2x a night. Then flooding on nights 2 and 3 of period. Aged nearly 42 and hoping my periods stop soon but the menopause doesn't sound like much fun either.

Freakonaleash · 26/04/2024 16:10

I'm like this. I get to day 22 and it starts. Day 13 I could happily eat three little things in a day no problem. Day 27 my body goes into feast mode. I literally can't stop eating. I have to really try to eat apples and not what I want which is mainly chocolate and pasta/cheese or pizza. My own understanding is that progesterone peaks day 21 (ish) and oestrogen has a smaller peak so this can affect appetite? I really hate the lead up to periods.

Catandsquirrel · 26/04/2024 16:10

For me it's fat and carbs rather than sugar but I'm unstoppable. Especially houmous and bread.
What I do is cook something cheesy with low fat feta or halloumi for at least one meal. That tricks my daft brain for a bit at least. V dark chocolate helps too but I've always had a savoury rather than sweet tooth.

Beatrixslobber · 26/04/2024 16:13

Just carbs for me

lavenderboux · 26/04/2024 16:17

Solidarity, OP! I could have written this. I've eaten x6 bags of crisps in the last 24 hours alone Shock I am CD2. I used to only get the carb/sugar cravings the week before my period, but now it seems to be the week before AND the week of.
I've stopped beating myself up about it though because I exercise and eat well for the other 2.5-ish weeks of the month.
Everything in moderation, it all balances out in the long run Grin

LiterallyOnFire · 26/04/2024 16:19

Yep. DD the same. Only ever attempt to eat well three weeks out of four.

NuffSaidSam · 26/04/2024 16:19

Yes, in the days leading up to it. I just go with it and try and eat better the rest of the month. You have to pick your battles, even with yourself.

Bluebellsinthewind · 26/04/2024 16:20

I am like a ferret on crack the week before my period. I absolutely crave takeaways/cakes/wine/crisps/bread...

MotherofWomen · 26/04/2024 17:54

McDonald’s for me please! And when I’m breastfeeding (like now!), I neeeeeed all the salt and carbs and fat and sugar. Give your body what it wants.

Also, three biscuits is a standard breakfast for me 🤣

Day 21 and my body is about to mutate into a carb. I just want to graze my way out of lethargy. I've felt so stiff, achey and sloth-like. I'm past the worst of it now and in about a week, I'll feel 15 years younger. I now actually look forwards to day 1 because it's the final stage of feeling bleurgh.
