How much would you pay for an independent artists print?

I'm looking for some new pictures, prints seem to be so expensive for what they are (£50 for an unframed 40x50cm print).

Am I out of touch or is that a lot?

Last one I bought (60 x 80cm) cost me £60 unframed.

That seems reasonable to me.

SometimesNine · 26/04/2024 11:06

From £80 onwards.

Selling artwork is their job. If you want cheap prints go to Ikea.

Smellz714 · 26/04/2024 11:08

€150 for the last one I got, well established artist although niche. Pay what you think it's worth, I love the print and think it'll bring me joy when I hang it, so worth it!

LauderSyme · 26/04/2024 11:09

That seems very reasonable to me for a limited edition original work.

Musictomytoes · 26/04/2024 11:10

£150 for the last print I bought but it was a signed limited edition of 5 from a well known artist.

Worldgonecrazy · 26/04/2024 11:11

Depends on the quality of the print. I wouldn’t pay a lot for a print but would prefer to save for an original. My favourite artist sells prints for over £800. An original is going to be 10 times that but worth the wait.

TheFlis · 26/04/2024 11:11

Good quality printing is expensive, and that’s before you add in the artists time for the original. I think £50 for something you love and see every day is a good deal.

LauderSyme · 26/04/2024 11:12

If price is your main driver, have you tried charity shops? There are always plenty of framed pictures in the ones in my town.

AnnaMagnani · 26/04/2024 11:42

Depends a bit on the artist and the size of the edition.

But £50 sounds very fair.

SpottyBumPony · 26/04/2024 11:50

Haha OK I'm after something for nothing, I'll reframe my thinking.

Price of course has an impact, I'm happy with secondhand art and always check out charity/junk shops when I'm there

To go in this room (excuse the unfished-ness)

If you like it and can afford it, buy it.

cushionfiend · 26/04/2024 13:04

£50 is very reasonable for a print of that size. Once you take into account the cost of printing, plus the artist's time, skills and materials, it's really not a lot!

Bumblebeeinatree · 26/04/2024 14:56

Is it a numbered Limited Edition? And how well known is the artist? A bit of a how long is a piece of string. I bought some framed short run limited edition prints, by a reasonably well known artist, some time ago, for a few hundred each I suspect similar would be £1,000 or more these days.

Hi @SpottyBumPony I have looked at your links and we have very different tastes in art so I would struggle to be more specific, but I am sure you could find something reasonably priced on Etsy that you would like. Happy hunting!
