How did he get bail?

Just been reading about the awful murder of Katie Simpson. The accused person, Jonathan Cresswell has just killed himself one day into the trial. How on earth did he get bail after being arrested for rape and murder? Why would the judge rely on him just turning up for the court case every day? It seems crazy.

Bail is supposed to be a right unless under some very specific circumstances e.g. it can be proven that they’re dangerous to society. If he had specific ties to the person he killed rather than just killing randomly it was probably considered unlikely he would do it again. If he didn’t turn up to court each day a warrant would be put out for his arrest and bail would have been revoked.

Yes but how can someone who's been accused of murder and previously been a perpetrator of domestic violence on someone else NOT be a danger to society? It just doesn't seem right to me. How awful for the victim's family that he can just be living his usual life after killing her.

I know this is an older thread but just wondering did you watch the spotlight programme tonight?

I watched this programme and felt so sad for Katie Simpson that she was failed in life and death. That a nurse attended a police station to raise concerns that she hadn't committed suicide and yet the police just didn't care to investigate it as anything other than suicide despite her bruises and bleeding indicating sexual assault
