Having a colonoscopy next week and I have to have it without sedation only has and air as I have no one to come with me so I have drive there and back and then go and collect my children from school I dont have anyone to help so I just said I’ll have to have the gas and air I am very scared of having this done I’ve heard it’s very painful
I have been having issues with my bowels for 2 years constipation lose bowels with blood and mucus randoms times I’ll get the urge to go the toilet and then sometimes I struggle to go
so I’ve had a few calprotectin test done but they only come back slightly elevated think around 150 but I’ve just had one done recently and it’s came back at 655 I know some get them in the thousands but my doctor said that it’s very elevated and I now need to have a colonoscopy I’m just worried what they may find I’m a worrier
I lost my mum 3 years ago and my dad 2 years before that
I’m only 30 so I’m just say worrying all the time 🤦🏻‍♀️ just seeing if anyone has had a colonoscopy with only G/A x

I had one with gas and air and it wasn’t painful at all, don’t worry. Weird yes, uncomfortable yes but not painful. They’re nowhere near as bad as people have you believe. I drive myself there and back

Im back to just add that, thinking about it now, there were parts of it that I’d say were mildly painful but certainly not v painful. But I do remember when it was over, being shocked that anyone would ever have a GA for that procedure, to me that seems massively unnecessary. You will be fine op

Shauna2866 · 25/04/2024 08:06

@ImNotThereAmI thank you for the reassurance as I’ve been so worried about it but I have to have it either way I need to see what is going on can not go on any longer like this not knowing what’s causing all my symptoms

I had one not too long ago.

There's really nothing to it.

Warning for details I'm about to share
....
I had to take Moviprep the night before.
It's a drink, you erm.. drink it.
I'm telling you now, it's at first bizarre and funny but eventually it's gross and annoying.
It *empties you out.. and I mean Empties you.
I've had Diarrhea before .. and this is not that, this is like someone's poured drain unclogger down your throat. But, i try to see the funny side of shitting water like a hose pipe from my arsehole.

Anyway.
Day of colonoscopy.
Turn up.
Get.changed into gown.
Take a little basket of my things with me.
Lie down on the little bed.
There's a nurse near my head, talking to me.. stroking my hair.. which I thought was weird so i asked her to stop.
She said to have a breath in of some gas and air.
I did.
Behind me, the specialist, talking through what he was going to do.
Basically he's going to shove a camera up me bum.
There was a screen.
I watched the screen.
I could feel the camera moving through my insides.

I didn't feel any pain whatsoever.
It's more like a trapped wind sensation.

anyway, the nurse at my head kept wibbling on about some crap, I wasn't listening, I was watching the monitor.
The little machine had a little tiny tiny pair of a scissor type things and it snipped a couple bits.
The specialist told me where he was roughly.
He then got to like a little door he wasn't allowed in.
He then slowly started reversing.
I made a Beep Beep Beep sound as he did.
Every one laughed...
He got to the end and said,
'hold your breath'
"Why?" I said..
And he pulled and I realised...
I'm not one to have things put up me bum bum but I understand some enjoy it and I may have a small glimpse as to why..
Besides the first blast of gas and air the nurse insisted on, I didn't have any more, she offered a few times but I didn't see the point, I was engrossed in the monitor.. watching the latest episode of "Up Me Arse: Where No One Has Been Before"
They wheeled me into a waiting area.
Offered me a tea or coffee, which I never got btw.. still annoyed at that..
I waited a little while, about 20 minutes.
Did some paper work, got dressed, left.
It hen went to McDonald's and had more burgers than I'd ever had before... I was starving..

...

Tl:Dr -
I had a colonoscopy. There was no pain at all. Felt like trapped wind. The monitor, if you can see it, is fascinating.

All in all, and being totally honest, there's nothing to worry about... In fact.. the Moviprep is worse than the camera.. 🤣🤣

Me personally, I had the sedation and I didn't feel like it did anything (it was quite unpleasant), but maybe gas and air would have been better.

It's good they are investigating, if no signs of bowel disease, ask them for a faecal elastase test if you haven't had one. I had somewhat similar symptoms and an elevated calprotectin, and I have exocrine pancreatic insufficiency, which was finally diagnosed after the faecal elastase. My colonoscopy was normal ish (at least normal enough for them not to diagnosed IBD).

Shauna2866 · 25/04/2024 10:02

@mindutopia ive never heard of that test before only calprotectin but I have had about 4 of them done but my last one was 655 !
I just hope it’s not anything really bad like the C word 🤦🏻‍♀️ I panic so much I don’t have anyone to speak to about it other than my GP they have been great with me though
I’ll have to just get on with it with the G/A see how I get on wish I could have the sedation but I have to get myself there and back
