Do you answer the phone?

I had a call today on my mobile.

07....

I didn't pick up as I didn't know who it was. They didn't leave a message.

My friend told me I'm odd. And told me to ring the number back.

I don't think I am odd. If they want to talk to me enough, they'll call me back and/or should have left a message.

What do you do?

I'll answer private numbers because it's often a doctor or some kind of health care professional calling from their personal phone so have withheld the number. And I'll answer calls with a local dialling code but I won't answer unknown mobile numbers. I had someone ring me and it came up that it was coming from Mozambique. That's blatantly a scam and once you answer, you then get hounded by calls.

The same. If I don't recognise I don't answer. If it's that important they'll leave a message and I'll get back to them straight away.

Yes, same.

My friend didn't answer an unknown number and she missed out on winning 100 thousand pounds on This Morning competition.
If you answer and don't know/ like the caller.. then you hang up and block.
It might be a friend calling to say they have a new number.

My friends had a cousin, who knew a member of the Royal Family and was a doctor, who kept ferrets, and they were in the toilet after a dodgy Indian and just managed to pick up the phone, after racing across their elegant Kensington appartment with a trail of toilet paper like a dragon's tail just to hear the voice saying "too late" click...

It actually works like this...

Never if I don't know who it is. I then Google the number to see if it's a scam call. If it is, I block the number.

BirthdayRainbow · 24/04/2024 20:07

I had a call yesterday but my phone is always on silent. I looked it up to see who it was. No clue. If they want me they can leave a message. I'm suspicious when they don't.

TeenDivided · 24/04/2024 20:08

I think answering the phone is a lot quicker and easier than checking against spam lists, listening to voicemail, phoning back etc.

fromaytobe · 24/04/2024 20:08

What is the point of having a phone if you don't answer it when it rings?

TeenDivided · 24/04/2024 20:10

If what I want can be done via a message then I would text. If I phone it is because of the want/need for 2 way dialogue.

Hoglet70 · 24/04/2024 20:12

I only answer the phone when I'm at work. At home (unless it's one of the aged parents) I'm a texter.

What the duck is the point of having a phone if you don't answer it? Is it too scary to talk to people?

You can say fuck on here.

dustyspring · 24/04/2024 19:40

Only if I'm expecting a call or recognise the number. I've read that if you answer spam calls then they will pass your number on to their friends because it shows that it's an active number. I don't even decline the call, just let it ring and then block. Perhaps I'm overcautious Blush

This.

I've read too many scare stories now about voices being recorded and answering the phone to spam calls.

Just answer the phone! What on earth is wrong with everyone?? Are you all the same people that don't answer the door either?

LightSpeeds · 24/04/2024 20:26

I never answer an unknown number. If it's genuinely for me they'll leave a message.

Topseyt123 · 24/04/2024 20:27

I don't answer numbers that are not recognised. If it's important then they will leave a message and then I can evaluate whether to call them back or not.

99% of the time they are spam calls and I just block them.

Not everyone is willing to answer a load of junk calls everyday.

UnravellingTheWorld · 24/04/2024 20:33

Yes, I can't not answer a ringing phone.

Answering plays into the hands of spammers. You have then confirmed that this is an active number and that is how you get more nuisance calls - they share/sell it on to other spammers/cold callers. No thanks!!

All close family and friends are listed in the contacts of my phone, so will be recognised. As is my GP surgery number and various numbers from the hospital I usually attend. In fact, all of their numbers seem to be recognised by my phone even if not amongst the ones I have actually saved. So no problem there.

I always answer the door unless it's late at night, when I might just speak on my Ring doorbell to decide whether I need to or not.

Growlybear83 · 24/04/2024 20:36

Of course i answer the phone. What's the point in having a phone if you're not going to answer it? 😆

coxesorangepippin · 24/04/2024 20:39

No, only from numbers I recognise

Growlybear83 · 24/04/2024 20:40

Having said that, very very few people have my mobile number and I use my landline for work. My landline phones don't have calmer display so I would never know who is ringing me before I answer.

Well that's shitty of them. They called once? There's a million reasons why someone might not pick up, poor form from This Morning

SoEmbarrassed2024 · 24/04/2024 21:24

If I don't recognise I don't answer. If they want me they can leave a message otherwise it's probably a sales call or scam

How silly, did she forget she’d entered the competition? She will have paid £2 to enter as well.

I hardly answer the phone at all as it’s usually on silent.

sanogo · 24/04/2024 21:52

I never answer a number that I either don't recognise or that is withheld

If they like they can leave a message

I usually Google the number afterwards and then find it's spam so block it
