Cough lasting 3 weeks

My daughter and I came down with a cough during the Easter holidays. Only other real symptom was hideous headaches. It felt a bit like a hangover from a virus I'd had earlier in March which I never really seemed to shake.

My cough went away after a few days but my daughter has had a persistent hacking cough. It seems to get better for a few days but then come back again.

A couple of days ago my cough seemed to come back, along with aching muscles, neck ache tiredness etc. Again hers seemed to ease off about the same time, but this evening is back with a vengeance. She is and has been otherwise fine. Her dad tested her for covid last week as his dad was going in for an op. And I tested myself yesterday as a couple of people I knew had it and I had an old box knocking round. It came back negative. What the hell is it? She particularly is fine and normal other than the cough. Which is just so hacking and has been keeping her awake. Cough medicine isn't having any effect.

It's doing the rounds. It's awful. Terrible. "Notcovid"

viques · 24/04/2024 19:26

I had a similar cough, ended up losing my voice completely for several days. Quite a few people I know have had similar. It just seems to be doing the rounds.

viques · 24/04/2024 19:26

The only thing that soothed it was fresh lemon juice, honey and hot water.

I'm in Brighton. My cough has finally gone now, but I had it for around two months, a deep hacking cough that almost felt like I had a chest infection. It would not clear, and I never brought anything up. Lots of my local friends have had exactly the same thing. I've never had a cough like it. No other symptoms. I don't smoke.

Tigersonvaseline · 24/04/2024 19:39

Yep it's running through my family.

Also started at Easter!

It's awful.

Badgertime · 24/04/2024 19:44

My daughter has had this too. It was horrendous and lasted about 2 weeks.
She has asthma but luckily it didn't go to her chest and it's much better now though still coughing a bit.

Badgertime · 24/04/2024 19:45

...and weirdly no cold!

ThirdStorm · 24/04/2024 20:46

I’m in week 5. Had 5 days of antibiotics but it hasn’t helped. Not been able to see my doctor since but hoping to. My chest feels like I’ve been kicked, so sore from coughing. Coughing where I can’t quite catch my breath. I hope it passes soon. I know a few people with it.

Savoyafternoon · 24/04/2024 20:50

I’m on week seven. Every few days I feel like I’m getting slightly better and then back to not. It’s completely draining.

MyGirlDaisy · 24/04/2024 21:06

Going through our house too. Started at Easter, coughing till you almost throw up, lethargic, it’s awful. I am asthmatic and on my second course of steroid tablets, I work outside and have had to take time off too as I can’t do my self employed job. I am into my third week and fed up!

MotherOfCatBoy · 24/04/2024 21:11

My son’s had it (17). Started in February some time, still had it at Easter. Normally a strong healthy boy. Just the cough, no sore throat, no cold, but the cough would make him almost throw up. Then he got a very odd fever that spiked his temp with a headache and aches and went again in 2 days. Took him to the doc, got 5 days’ antibiotics which made no difference. She also referred him for a chest X Ray which he had today. The cough has just about gone now, he says he’s better, but the GP appt was about 3 weeks ago now and I think it’s standard with a persistent cough in an otherwise healthy non smoker. Expecting to be told there’s nothing wrong except a virus.

Icanseethebeach · 24/04/2024 21:12

Whooping cough lasts for a 100 days and is all over the UK at the moment. Older children and adults don’t normally make the whoop noise.

I didn't know this about WC. Wouldn't childhood vaccinations prevent it though?

The cough was also making my daughter throw up motherofcatboy.
She actually threw up again last night everywhere!

Boxerdor · 24/04/2024 21:20

My daughter has this too! She’s 8 and has had it since beginning of March. The coughing wakes her up at night, she coughs until she’s heaving. She has a blue inhaler which makes no difference. It’s exhausting her and she’s sick of it. Back to the dr tomo but I’m not sure what they’ll do. I thought maybe it was asthma but will look into whooping cough- she has had her jabs so I hadn’t considered this.

AFmammaG · 24/04/2024 21:22

Same here with my child, described it to the GP over the phone and they said it sounded like 2 consecutive viruses and no treatment necessary 🤷‍♀️

weegiemum · 24/04/2024 21:31

Dh is a GP and has referred to this as the "100 day cough". Lots of people (including me) still coughing at a couple of months due to a cold. I caught a nasty cold in February while I was having radiotherapy. I'm still coughing, still bringing up a bit of phlegm but my chest is clear. Nothing to be done but wait it out apparatchik!

GenerousGardener · 24/04/2024 21:37

I’ve got it. I’m so sick of it. It’s a dry tickle in the back of my throat that makes me cough till I heave, I also sneeze at the end of the cough. I’ve had it for about six weeks now. I don’t want to waste the docs time over it. It can go away anytime it likes now.

Ringpeace · 24/04/2024 21:37

I've had The Cough. I'm asthmatic, so always got a bit of a cough on, but this was something else. Started in February, got gradually worse - ended up on a nebuliser in A&E 3 times over a fortnight. One particularly bad night I could barely breathe, asthma inhaler barely touched it and A&E doc next morning told me I should have called an ambulance 😳

My GP (who is very good) says it's likely to be whooping cough, although at one point early on the suspicion was an asthma flare up caused by tree pollen (we live next to a massive wood). Having a blood test next week to confirm. Had a CT scan to rule out "anything more serious".

Think I've finally turned a corner, but it's taken four courses of steroids!

Wouldn't wish it on anyone. It's horrendous.

Edit: GP told me that the Whooping Cough vaccine fades in adulthood.

Ringpeace · 24/04/2024 21:43

Oh, and I've put loads of weight on because I can't run or cycle, and because of the 'roids.

Great

Badgertime · 24/04/2024 21:47

I'm just reading up on the vaccine. I thought it lasted a lifetime?
Seems maybe not?

kj2023 · 24/04/2024 21:49

I started coughing in mid December and having chest tightness and wheezing. Non smoker and no previous asthma history etc. One round of antibiotics and 2 rounds of steroids since December. I ended up in hospital on Monday with shortness of breath and wheezing. 24hrs on nebs and sent home with an inhaler for the next 2 months and a further course of steroids. Docs said its Bronchitis. Honestly just cannot wait to feel better again! Hope you get it sorted 👍

moggle · 24/04/2024 21:55

I’ve got this now! Whole family almost have
had some form of it, though the cough not as bad as some of you. DH had it first in March, lasted a good few weeks, the DD9 got it at the start of April and tbh only just getting back to normal though the worst with a fever was during the Easter holidays so she hasn’t missed school. She has hay fever and asthma so it’s been all mixed up together. DS6 started it last weekend but no temp, just a sore throat and extra tired, and I started it on Monday. Body aches, shivers, temperature and a splitting headache. Just other DS6 to get it but he’s been coughing this evening too.
sorry everyone’s suffering but almost glad to hear we’re not the only ones.

OnHerSolidFoundations · 24/04/2024 22:19

Oh god we've had it for fucking months in this house! 🙈

DrCoconut · 24/04/2024 22:21

I've got the worst and longest lasting cough ever. I'm off work sick as my head and throat hurt and I can't speak for long (needed for job) without coughing.

Tigersonvaseline · 24/04/2024 22:26

Surely it must be a form of covid?. Even during covid my family didn't catch anything from each other at all, eg one of us had it but didn't isolate?

We didn't get it and with covid non of us coughed this badly.
