Any ideas what is wrong with my shoulder/arm

I know that some of you will feel this is a diagnose me thread but I am more looking for ideas to look further into myself.

For the last few weeks my left shoulder /forearm has been uncomfortable.. I'm fine when sitting, normally walking mostly when sleeping. However the best I can describe it is like the inner part of my shoulder is sore and swollen. However the pain Level is a 1 really low discomfort.. that is until I stretch up to get something. That is very uncomfortable and feels like I recall having a sprained wrist does ( in my upper fore arm) Shoulder feels like I'm doing a good stretch after exercises. The worst is if I try to put my bra on. That is outright painful and some mornings I can't turn my arm to the back to do so. This is intense pain that disappears the moment I lower arm away from my back.

I know I need to see the gp. I have been putting it off as I was originally hoping it was a pinched nerve and resting it would make it better. However it's not really doing much.

I had a whiplash injury many years ago and I can't sleep without an orthopedic pillow this gives me a numb arm. I've tried changing the pillow to a higher arch and that seemed to improve it but it's now just in limbo.

Am I missing something? /anyone got any ideas for what this can be if not a pinched nerve?

I have similar and I have a rotator cuff injury. I'm about to have a steroid injection for mine. You need to see a physio to establish how bad it is and what treatment you need.

Mrsjayy · 23/04/2024 08:46

Sound like it might be the start of a frozen shoulder or a rotary cuff injury go to the gp .

SabrinaThwaite · 23/04/2024 08:47

I’m thinking possible frozen shoulder too. Being unable to raise my arm as high as the other one was an early sign too.

Dunno OP but I have the same, it feels muscular to be honest so I'm trying to let it heal but keep forgetting and wrenching it again.

Sore when putting on a jacket or lifting it to put deodorant on. Otherwise fine going about my day to do business, hence keeping forgetting and doing something to make it hurt again.

Leaning forward and dangling it and kinda spinning it is supposed to help, but I keep forgetting to do that too...

Start of Frozen shoulder. I have had it twice and very painful once fully sets in. Try and get an appointment asap. Physio and Acupuncture help but I had to have a small operation twice to help where they insert saline to the affected muscles and break up the adhesions. Time is key with it before it gets worse.

goingtohellinahandcart · 23/04/2024 08:50

That's how my frozen shoulder started

DramaLlamaBangBang · 23/04/2024 08:53

I have this as well! I was hoping some yoga would resolve it but I can't do the stretches on my left arm. I'll go to the GP.

Nannyfannybanny · 23/04/2024 08:55

Can you bend your arm backwards as if doing your bra up, reaching for back pocket, without pain? If no,my money is on a frozen shoulder, I have had 3. GP gave me diazepam as a muscle relaxant. I firstly saw an osteopath. On the last one,my oldest DD who is a qualified masseuse, sorted it in 6 weeks. DH has a rotator cuff injury,he slipped on mud coming downhill from a dog walk hyper extended his arm, landline on his outstretched hand. His pain is in the front where your arm meets your chest,in the socket area..

Womblingmerrily · 23/04/2024 08:55

In lots of areas you can self refer to NHS physiotherapy - this might be useful if it's in your area.

Nannyfannybanny · 23/04/2024 08:57

Blasted phone, I typed landed, not landline,!!

Enko · 23/04/2024 09:03

Ok this is interesting as I had discounted a frozen. Shoulder as I had read they are very painful. I guess I better make a gp appointment.. No self referral in my area.

@Nannyfannybanny I can reach for back pocket no issue but really struggle when trying to put bra on. Yesterday I had to abandon and get dh to do it for me (took him ages too 😅) I was just in too much pain. Today was easier but painful. Also my dyslexia meant I didn't notice your spelling issue until you corrected 😌

I've not heard of this link, I was on HRT,many years post menopausal when I had my 3 frozen shoulders. I know it's more likely in type 2 diabetics.

Mrsjayy · 23/04/2024 15:58

I read something somewhere about frozen shoulder being common in women in their 40s,so there is maybe something in it?

Nothingandnobody · 23/04/2024 16:24

Impingement

littlejo67 · 23/04/2024 16:38

I went to the GP with exactly these symptoms. I had an ultrasound scan..it was impingement syndrome and a torn tendon.

Enko · 23/04/2024 18:03

Thats interesting @Boomboomboomboom but I have to say I am post menupausal and have been for some years.

Interesting link though.

I've had two similar injuries. First one I let get very frozen and it took a long while to go but got better with physio massage and stretching exercises.

Second one I went to the physio a lot quicker but actually got better over the summer when I couldn't visit her 🤷‍♀️

HelloDenise · 23/04/2024 19:26

I've got it too I'm having physio that's helped a bit.

Deathraystare · 24/04/2024 09:03

This is something I have to investigate!

I had a Covid jab in October and the next day had a sore arm. Thought nothing of it, people do get sore arms, but I still have it. Unsure whether it is rheumatoid arthritis in yet another part of my body or maybe the jab went in the muscle?

I want to be seen by a rheumatologist anyway but I will have to go for a diabetes/BP check first as they always go on about that!

Movinghouseatlast · 24/04/2024 09:09

It sounds like the beginning of frozen shoulder. If you are lucky it my only be a rotator cuff tear.

I would get it diagnosed ASAP. You can self refer to physio which can be quicker. Get on the waiting list for a cortisone injection as the sooner you get that the better. In my experience the pain ramped up very quickly.
