Any ideas what is wrong with my shoulder/arm

I know that some of you will feel this is a diagnose me thread but I am more looking for ideas to look further into myself.

For the last few weeks my left shoulder /forearm has been uncomfortable.. I'm fine when sitting, normally walking mostly when sleeping. However the best I can describe it is like the inner part of my shoulder is sore and swollen. However the pain Level is a 1 really low discomfort.. that is until I stretch up to get something. That is very uncomfortable and feels like I recall having a sprained wrist does ( in my upper fore arm) Shoulder feels like I'm doing a good stretch after exercises. The worst is if I try to put my bra on. That is outright painful and some mornings I can't turn my arm to the back to do so. This is intense pain that disappears the moment I lower arm away from my back.

I know I need to see the gp. I have been putting it off as I was originally hoping it was a pinched nerve and resting it would make it better. However it's not really doing much.

I had a whiplash injury many years ago and I can't sleep without an orthopedic pillow this gives me a numb arm. I've tried changing the pillow to a higher arch and that seemed to improve it but it's now just in limbo.

Am I missing something? /anyone got any ideas for what this can be if not a pinched nerve?

I had this. It wasn’t frozen shoulder. Although it was diagnosed as it initially. It was nerve pain in the neck. I saw a specialist nerve physio.

He gave me exercises but said it does eventually heal on its own. Takes about 2 years.

The other one’s gone now. Not as bad, but getting better.

Late 50’s when it happened. I think it’s an older thing.

Another fun option is calcific tendinitis. Starts similarly to a frozen shoulder and ends up being massively painful. Hope the GP is useful.

Gp was really good actually. I moved gp 8 months ago and this was my first visit.

She agered it is a frozen. Shoulder. Have given me pain killers and anti acids. And a referral for physiotherapy .

Said good news is it does heal
Bad news is it hurts and it takes a long time to heal.

As I left said to return if I felt I needed.

Was actually very happy with the reaction from gp.

You might be lucky and find that it doesn’t last too long - mine started in the April, was really painful June / July but started to ease off by mid August. I just did physio and kept it moving, and got full range of motion back.

I found sleeping with my arm propped up
on a pillow helped with sleep.

Sounds like what I have just now, a rotator cuff injury, currently getting physio and does feel better when I do the exercises I have been given.

Enko, thought I was correct, having had 3. First was incorrectly diagnosed by osteopath. Was told dislocated shoulder, then to rest it and not lift it above head height. Lasted a year. That was right side. Left went to GP he prescribed diazepam as a muscle relaxant. I saw a physio (NHS) weekly,it was difficult to get to the hospital,so I bought dymo bands and did the excercises daily at home. That was a few months. Right one went again, oldest DD is a qualified masseuse and aromatherapist, she lived fairly near. I bought a book by a Swedish osteopath called "Health your own frozen shoulders". It involves movements and pressure points,so you can't actually do them on yourself. You do however, need someone who is clued up on anatomy. She had it sorted in 6 weeks! I didn't find any analgesia that worked,in the end I slept on the floor (that was a fluke we had sold the bed) and that worked.

I've had something similar since October.

The pain has grown in intensity and some days it's agony.
Not slept properly for 7 months as a result

I had an x ray in October - nothing negative reported.
Had a steroid injection in December - didn't help.
Had an ultrasound - bursitis identified
Have had physio 3 times with ongoing exercises - pain no better
Have tried various medications - not taking liquid morphine in the evenings and overnight to try and help.
Seen GP several times over the months and finally got them to refer me to a specialist in early March.

Finally saw an orthopaedic surgeon yesterday. Have collar bone damage from arthritis (diagnosed with PA years ago) which has led to the bursitis too. Now in the waiting list for surgery. Just hoping the list isn't too long a wait as the pain is awful.

Mine started as a dull ache, almost like a strained or pulled muscle, in my shoulder and gotten worse since. Pain radiates throughout my shoulder and down my arm (not normally going beyond my elbow) and into my neck. The pain is now constant with intense pain in and off throughout the day. I'm tired and grumpy with it tbh.

They initially thought mine was frozen shoulder. But I've got most movement still. It just hurts.

ToddlerMumma · 11/05/2024 09:20

Sounds like frozen shoulder. My husband had it and very painful if he tried to lift his arm
Up. He had cortisone injections which didn't work but then had water injected into the joint which solved the problem. Defo go to your GP

I have similar and I have a rotator cuff injury. I'm about to have a steroid injection for mine. You need to see a physio to establish how bad it is and what treatment you need.

I have a rotator cuff injury from a fall 15 years ago. Periodically, I get a shooting pain through the joint; as if someone's shoving a knitting needle through it.

Nannyfannybanny · 11/05/2024 10:30

Enko,do people actually read the post, where it says you saw your GP. My DH damaged his rotator cuff,he slipped on mud coming down a hill walking the dogs. Hyper extended his arm landing on his outstretched hand. The pain is in a completely different place, near the arm socket. He had physio which was useless. This was 3 years ago,it plays up occasionally.

Enko · 12/05/2024 08:15

@Nannyfannybanny. I do wish we could press an "Update'' so an altert would show at the original post. However, I've been guilty of it myself a few times.

That's exactly how I did mine, except I was running for a bus.
