Diamonds keep falling out of engagement ring

My husband bought my engagement ring back in 2018 and I've had countless issues with it, the first being the band snapping after having it re-sized. Since then I've had multiple diamonds fall out. The most recent one was I received it back from repair in October and I've taken it back again to have it repaired since the diamond has fallen out again. Each time they have sent off to a third party who have said there is wear all over the ring but I haven't had any trauma to the ring and I don't have a manual job. I've just had a call from the jewellers to say they will not be repairing it again and that I need to claim on my home insurance. I've just checked my policy and this isn't covered. What can I do? Do I just need to accept that the stone has fallen out and it's tough luck or should I push back and ask them to repair it yet again as it's within a year of the previous repair? Any advice on this would be greatly appreciated

I've had my engagement ring since 2018 too, and the band hasn't snapped nor have the diamonds fallen out.

What material is your ring made from and what type of setting does it have?

Where did you purchase it from, and is it the same place you are getting it repaired?

Maybe get a new ring made...? Although that's an expensive solution.

What style is it? That’s not normal. I’ve worn mine for 22 years and never lost a stone. I wonder if making it smaller changed the curve too much.

It's white gold I believe, similar style to the pic. Yes, I've always been back to the original jewellers for all repairs. In my eyes an engagement ring should have no issues (or very few) for years. I feel like I'm stuck between a rock and a hard place!

I do believe this is why I've had so many issues with it because they have said the return rate on the ring is low and so they are putting all the blame on me each time I have it repaired saying I have damaged it and asking what I've done to cause the damage!

I had this, well not as bad as you describe. It was white gold, we got it reset into platinum. Haven't had any problems since. We did go to a different jewellers after they had repaired it twice. I can give a recommendation for the guy we used in Hatton Garden in London if helpful.

How many sizes did you alter it by?

twointhemorning · 22/04/2024 20:41

I wonder if you could take it to an independent jeweller and get a second opinion?
I have a solitaire with channel set diamonds on the shoulder and none have fallen out. But mine is platinum and hasn't been resized.

acupofteamakeseverythingbetter · 22/04/2024 20:43

Maybe I should get the ring back and ask for a second opinion. Very frustrating but feel I'm running out of options if they are refusing to repair it. Can they refuse to repair it if it was only repaired back in October?

Bought my engagement ring in 1993. Worn daily, all the time. 1st diamond fell out 2016. It wasn't a hugely expensive ring either, but I have now had to get the claws built back up when having the diamond reset.
I would expect an engagement ring to last longer than yours has.

ohtowinthelottery · 22/04/2024 20:57

I'm pretty sure my repair was guaranteed for 12 months too.

My wedding band is too big but the jeweller won't resize as the stones are likely to become loose due to how they are held in by tension. Did they say it might cause issues after resizing?
