I’ve got this viral thing and have felt like crap for the last week. In the last hour the cough has become something else! I can’t breathe or speak without a coughing fit and I’m coughing to the point of nearly being sick. I went to the doctors earlier on and apparent as it’s a virus I just have to wait it out but can anyone help with the cough? Thanks in advance

Antihistamines

FadedRed · 22/04/2024 18:29

Spoonful of honey.
Gargle with neat whisky/brandy or similar spirit.

Newuser75 · 22/04/2024 18:30

Antihistamines
Or cough medicine with codeine
Sit in the bathroom with hot shower running.

Have a really hot shower and let the steam build up, then vicks on the soles of your feet and socks on top.

Hidingthegoodchocolate · 22/04/2024 18:32

Codeine (if safe for you to take; don't take for too long).
Antihistamines as PP said.
Steam (bowl of hot water, head over, towel).

Sympathies. I am on week 8 of the viral cough (but it got a lot better after week 5 to be fair).

LindorDoubleChoc · 22/04/2024 18:50

I have this at the moment. Sympathies Flowers. It was at it's absolute peak on Friday and I thought I was going to burst a blood vessel in my head, mercifully it's less severe now.

This is my 6th prolonged viral illness in 8 months. I've never been generally so unwell, never had so many days off work and cancelled social events - it must all be linked to covid.

PinkSparklyPussyCat · 22/04/2024 18:52

Thank you all!

@Hidingthegoodchocolate I had that one over Christmas and it’s horrible, I hope you feel better soon. This time I’ve had aa terrible sore throat and my sinuses have been blocked. I’ve got a sales meeting tomorrow that I’m supposed to be contributing to which should be interesting!

I'm sorry I've had this for 6 weeks now. Whooping cough is on the rise this year apparently. You can be prescribed antibiotics and steriods which I had but the GP didn't swab for whooping cough as they have to fill in a ton of paperwork if it comes back positive.
The steroids helped a bit but nothing has stopped it and I have pulled all the muscles in my side.
I also had to buy tena lady! God it's awful. Small sips of water helped a bit if I feel the tickle.
6 weeks!!

PinkSparklyPussyCat · 22/04/2024 19:32

I don't think it's whooping cough and the doctor didn't seem too worried this afternoon, not that I was making the horrendous racket I did just now!

I'm gutted you can't get codeine linctus any more, that used to sort out all coughs!

To stop a tickle setting you off, tip your head right forward ie nearly upside down, so the snot runs out if your nose rather than down the back of your throat. Use a tissue and blow a few times gently.

Good if you can catch it before it makes you cough so you don't feel sick with your head bent over!

Just gives you a couple of minutes to catch your breath before it starts again.

These colds are lasting weeks nowadays.

Nickinoo22 · 22/04/2024 19:51

Ok , I am not trying to be the voice of doom here. It obviously highly likely to be a virus but I had exactly the same a few years ago and twice doctors sent me home and telling me to give it time .
I felt so ill , unable to breath properly, (which was unusual for me) that I took myself off to a&e.
I had a massive pulmonary embolism.

So I guess I am saying listen to your body and if you think something isn't right act on the feeling.
Hope you feel better soon.

patchworkpal · 22/04/2024 19:52

Omg I have this. Thank you I feel so much better just knowing I'm not alone

I had that one too.. 3 months of solid I need a pee everytime I cough coughing. I thought it couldn't be the 100 day cough as it didn't sound whooping and I'd had vaccinations but aparantly it most likely was

Another one that's had both! Sorry you're feeling rough as well. I spoke to my friend earlier and she had it last month and said she's had covid 3 times and whatever this is is far worse. So far it's affected my throat, sinuses, ears and eyes!

I'm never unwell and I've been off twice this year with whatever it is that everyone is coming down with. Last time I had a cold / virus was in 2017. Never got covid knowingly. Anyway this sounds condescending but the only thing that helped me was rest / drinking water to the extent I was peeing every hour and new to me was the Vicks on soles of feet with a cosy sock on top and also slathered on my chest and top of my back. Codeine - tick, Sudafed but of course watch that if taking Codeine. The other thing I learned online was the nasal homemade salt solution it is on the NHS site under Sinitus and wow it was instant relief and a nice thing to do in the evening ha! Hope you get some relief soon

daffodilandtulip · 22/04/2024 21:59

Homemade hot honey and lemon, everytime. I've had this 100 day thing this year.

SkiingIsHeaven · 22/04/2024 22:25

Sleep in an armchair. Lying down flat makes you cough.

PinkSparklyPussyCat · 23/04/2024 17:33

To add insult to injury I now have conjunctivitis as well 🙄

WickWood · 23/04/2024 18:54

I've had this twice in the past 4/5 weeks (pregnant so really shoddy immune system), both times was a chest infection.

Please keep an eye, on the Friday I was told it was "viral" on the Saturday I was at the OOH with a chest infection diagnosis on an inhaler and antibiotics.

Sorry to say, both times nothing helped until I was prescribed antibiotics. The throat pain is on another level also! Now your cough is worse I would honestly try and get another appointment. Good luck!

PivotPivotmakingmargaritas · 23/04/2024 18:58

Heat pack on your lower lungs so mid back seems to calm my lungs down and then gargle warm water with salt and drink tea with honey to calm your throat and mouth.

Welliwould · 23/04/2024 19:13

I've got this too. I've got sore throat lozenges from boots, the branded ones are called strefen but there is a boots own version which is a bit cheaper. You might have to ask the pharmacy for them. They have a bit of a numbing effect. Also covonia spray numbs the throat. I use night nurse at night which contains a drowsy antihistamine which can help me get a few hours sleep.
Then the other things that others have said. The hot showers and steam, sipping water or hot drinks, a nasal rinse, I'm using sterimar. The Vicks one is new on me, I'll be trying that this evening. I had painful sinuses too so I used a microwave wheat bag with a couple of drops of olbas oil and draped it over my face, that was heavenly and helped massively with the sinus pain which went away after a couple of days.

Ditto. It really works.

cocovanwild · 23/04/2024 19:16

Take a codeine and paracetamol before bed to help you sleep, you only need one but it kills the urge to cough, don't do it for more than a few days though.

lovemycbf · 23/04/2024 19:19

I have this awful virus too I had a sinus, ear and throat infection
I got antibiotics which cleared up the sinus and throat but I'm currently on day 9 of vertigo due to ear infection nothing I've tried has so far stopped me feeling drunk ,deaf and roaring tinnitus
Fingers crossed you feel better soon
