Would you have waited? Scary moment with baby!!

I went to my usual weekly baby class today and parked up in a space. I got out the car and opened up the back door to get my 3 month old baby out.

The car parked next to us then started reversing out!! It’s wing mirror then clipped the open door and started closing on me and baby. I had baby out of the seat at this moment so she was in my arms. I couldn’t push the door open again as the moving car was preventing me. It was a really scary moment!! And I’m still shaken!

When I’m about to reverse out a space I check to the sides and if anyone is getting in or out I wait for them to finish. Is this what others do?

I was parked centrally in the space and don’t have a massive car (Astra) so I genuinely don’t think it was my fault but I keep thinking it through in my head and if I was holding baby in a different place how she could’ve been hurt. Just really shaken.

From what I understand from an insurance perspective, if your car was stopped and theirs was moving then it's entirely their fault. What a horrible experience for you!

Aquamarine1029 · 22/04/2024 13:44

Who was the absolute idiot driving that other car? They could have very seriously injured you and your baby. I would have been livid.

PoppyCherryDog · 22/04/2024 13:56

It was an old lady driving with what I assume was her husband in the front passenger seat.

I shouted at them to be patient and wait and not crush my baby! I rarely shout and keep myself to myself in public but it just came out! Just so shocked.

Yes, they were entirely at fault and you were entirely blameless. No wonder you shouted, you must have been terrified!

Aquamarine1029 · 22/04/2024 14:07

I wish you had gotten her plate number and reported her. She should not be driving.

shellyleppard · 22/04/2024 14:08

I would have banged on the car roof or window to stop them!!! Maybe they didn't realise your car door was open. If they were elderly their reaction/awareness isn't so good. Hope you and your little one are okay x

Singleandproud · 22/04/2024 14:09

Did she see you and just carry on or was her husband obstructing her view? Either way she was at fault and it's lucky you weren't hurt.

Changingplace · 22/04/2024 14:12

Wow how scary, entirely the drivers fault not yours! I’d have banged on the window/roof of their car, they must’ve been completely oblivious and not checked around them at all!

If someone’s awareness/reactions mean they’re not aware of their surroundings to this level they really shouldn’t be driving :(

I did try to memorise it. It was only 5 characters long and I know the colour and make of car. Going to see if it’s there next week (I think there’s a 60+ coffee morning at the venue just before our class). So I imagine they’ll be there next week.

Totally their fault.

Either they didn't see you, in which case they're a shit driver. Or they did see you, in which case they're a shit person.

Longcovider · 22/04/2024 15:07

OP another time you could bang on the back of their car. Sounds like a really dangerous driver not looking at what is behind them. Really scary.

Solmum1964 · 22/04/2024 17:23

Whilst they were clearly in the wrong, I tend to assume all other drivers are idiots!
If I'd been aware that people had returned to their vehicle and started their engine I'd have waited for them to move off before getting anyone out of the car their side.
I don't think it would be sensible to bang on their car as you could make them jump and do something even more dangerous.

LemonPeonies · 22/04/2024 17:26

How would OP gave been able to bang on their car while trapped by her own car door and holding the baby? I would have chased them afterwards though.

AngryLikeHades · 22/04/2024 17:31

The other driver was an ignorant bastard. You were right to be scared and exert yourself xxx

They didn’t have their engine on at the point I got out the car. They just started it and reversed without looking I think as I don’t remember even hearing their engine. They’re lucky they didn’t hit anyone else walking behind them tbh as there’s lots of mum’s with prams around walking to class. So scary! Just glad we are both ok.

I wish I had chased them now! I keep thinking back to how dangerously it could’ve ended

Very glad you're both ok.
Out of interest, could it have been an electric vehicle? It's actually quite scary how quiet they can be!

patchworkpal · 22/04/2024 19:58

Terrifying. Could have ended so badly.

AntiHop · 22/04/2024 20:20

I would definitely do an online report to the police.

Alalalalalongalalalalalonglonglilong · 22/04/2024 22:01

Of course you didn't bang or chase them, you were focused on your baby as you should be. That's horrible and scary. I'd be having a stiff drink tonight if I were you.
