Daily showering/not showering discussion (Loose Women)

That MN perennial favourite 'showering' was under discussion on today's show and it made me smile because it seems to come up all the time on here. They said a daily shower is not necessary contraversial and two to three times a week is fine: their point was that daily showering is expensive, not great for the environment, might not be good for you as dries out skin and hair. They all were in agreement but Nadia said she likes a daily shower "not to do with being dirty" but as she likes water. I assume a well done to one of their researchers may be in order?

After all the 'heated debates' I have witnessed it just tickled me. A bit like someone you know appearing on TV 😆

Have also made a duplicate post (in Telly Addicts) which I know irritates some posters. Wasn't sure where to put it. The do you/don't you shower generally gets plonked in AIBU but I don't have a question so that would be pointless.

How revolting. Imagine wearing clothes until they're really "gross" when you're so rich and privileged.

It's also ridiculous. Who on earth washes their clothes on their body? He's not Robinson Crusoe!

I know. If only someone could point out "gentle cycle" on the washing machine 🙄

SLeanne · 28/09/2024 04:59

However I did once go 3 days without a shower but that was in lockdown when time stood still 😂

Twice per day?!?!?! That's absolutely insane and I'd be quite concerned what is at the root of this

I expect repeatedly being drenched in sweat then drying out, regularly throughout the day and night, is at the root of it. Don't knock it until you've been there.

I feel your pain. Had to stop my HRT suddenly due to health issues. If I didn't have children, I could get by without the heating this winter, and that would be fantastic for the environment!

unsync · 28/09/2024 05:45

I stand in menopausal solidarity with with @BarrelOfOtters

No one's saying the shower needs to be half an hour though, 2-3 mins tops. Soap, shampoo, rinse and out.

Edingril · 28/09/2024 05:53

I don't the idea that flannel washing is quicker than a shower, I jump in quickly wash my self or my child when they were younger and get put by the time I do a flannel wash it seems longer and more off a faff on

Are you a menopausal woman? What is your concern exactly? 😂

I shower /bath twice a day, always have.

Edingril · 28/09/2024 06:05

My older teenager showers twice a day, short ones we do sometimes

It's bullshit. People get environmental dirt on them from the air and sweat/oils on them from their own bodies. Of course people need a daily bath/shower. The skin/hair argument is totally nonsense. Thats what moisturizer and conditioner were invented for. So people could be both clean and unshrivelled. No reason to be a dried out itchy flaky raisin at all.

Of course they're right about it being more expensive than not showering daily, but that doesn't mean it's not needed. Healthy food is more expensive than junk. Growing children required the purchase of new clothes that fitted. A property with a bedroom for your children is more expensive than a one bedroom flat. All these things are still needed, even though you can survive without them.

Humans existing is bad for the environment. Perhaps we should all put an end to our existence in the name of savings the planet? Or maybe thinking what's best for the planet has to be weighed up with what's best for us.

Unless you're in a situation where you're choosing between water to drink and water to wash with, people should shower/bath daily. Not doing so is deliberately scummy. Skipping your bath/shower should be a last resort only if you can't help it and have no choice. Like if there's zero spare water or you're too ill to do it.

They can say whatever they like on a TV show it's never going to change my opinion.

Edited

How do you define 'needed' though? People managed through almost all of human history not showering/bathing every day. Relatively speakjng, it's a very , very recent thing, so how can it actually be necessary?

WorriedMillie · 28/09/2024 06:56

I shower every morning, I’ve perfected the art of a very quick shower, partly because of environmental reasons and partly because of time

I’ve worked with a handful of people who didn’t shower daily, over the years. They claimed not to smell. They did. 🤮
I wonder if they couldn’t smell themselves….

People managed without all sorts of things in human history. Times change.

I know you can do a flannel wash, and I do if there’s no alternative. But I’m a menopausal woman, who exercises too, I need a shower in the morning and like a bath or shower before bed.

A strip wash my nan used to call it.

Really don't see why we should ration showers / baths. Life is hard and miserable enough! Showers invigorate me I won't be culling or curtailing them.

when i was at junior school (70s) we played out every day, walked to and from school and played outside at lunchtime. We climbed trees, built dens, played running aruond types of games etc etc. If we got actual dirt on us it was a flannel wash.

And then once a week was bath and hairwash night. And i remember hair washing vividly because we had a bath with those rubber shower attachment things for hair washing, which we did after the bath by leaning our heads over the side of the bath. And you always had to wash twice, the first time the water was absolutely filthy and the shampoo didn't have so many suds. Second wash very bubbly and squeaky clean afterwards. Then we discovered conditioner so the brusing afterwards wasn't such an issue.

The air was absolutely filthy back then, what with leaded petrol etc, aside of all the grubbiness that came from being a mostly-outdoorsey bunch of kids (except for Tuesdays at 4:30, then all the kids just piled in the nearest house for Spiderman. And if a mum was about we often got squash and biscuits too.

This sounds glorious. I was the same but born in 80's. My brother born in 70's though and I was his side kick

stayathomer · 28/09/2024 07:11

44 and always had only 3 showers a week until about a year ago and not I wake up every morning and everywhere stinks so can’t not- a lot of friends the same- all saying it’s an age thing and depressing 😅🙈I’ve tried changing all the things I can- duvet, pjs etc but I reek! Hair only three times a week though.

It's not. "detrimental for your skin". What nonsense. Millions of us shower daily and have healthy, clean skin. Eczema is a whole other issue.

I made that comment months ago. However, advice from dermatologists, including the British Association of Dermatologists, advise against frequent washing and showering especially with hot water as it can strip natural oils,
disrupt the skin barrier (the protective barrier that keeps moisture in and harmful bacteria out, cause an imbalance of skin microbiome and exacerbate some skin conditions. So yes, "detrimental for your skin", as I said way back in April.

People also had 12 or 13 children who all died of infectious diseases and living to late 30s/ early 40s was old age.
They also pooed and peed where they stood and their teeth were rotten.
Hardly something to be recommended!

Basic health consists of daily bath, shower or wash -showers are more convenient, regular healthy meals, appropriate clothing, oral care , sleep, exercise, safe, clean housing.

The health and MH of the nation would improve dramatically.

Also quoting dermatologists in this context is nonsense.
No one is suggesting bathing or showering in boiling water with harsh chemicals.
A quick shower with shower oil and moisturiser after is fine.

DriedFlowersLiveForever · 28/09/2024 09:07

I grew up only having one bath per week and minimal flannel washes inbetween, I lived somewhere excessively dirty and I REEKED as a child. I have never forgiven my parents for feeling that was acceptable especially as it contributed to the bullying I got all through high-school.
I actively enjoy my daily showers/baths/clean clothes/clean bedding and would go without other things to keep being clean.
I was the person that bathed my children daily and put them in fresh pjs every night, no regrets. Both of my kids have daily showers and clean clothes and I am so pleased they don't have my childhood.

caramac04 · 28/09/2024 09:14

I used to work with someone who always smelled of soap. Probably Dove. It was a lovely smell. Pretty sure she showered daily but our work environment in health care made that necessary for all.

That's very sad. Children can be so cruel. I was the same with my children, not because it happened to me but I remember a girl in primary school in the early 80's and she always smelled of wee. Whether she didn't have clean clothes or she had an incontinence problem I'll never know but the other kids were horrible to her. However, now my DS is a teenager it's a whole different ball game 🤣

No. Most of us are not showering with very hot water and strong soap.
It's perfectly fine to shower every day.
