Daily showering/not showering discussion (Loose Women)

Mothership4two · 22/04/2024 13:25

That MN perennial favourite 'showering' was under discussion on today's show and it made me smile because it seems to come up all the time on here. They said a daily shower is not necessary contraversial and two to three times a week is fine: their point was that daily showering is expensive, not great for the environment, might not be good for you as dries out skin and hair. They all were in agreement but Nadia said she likes a daily shower "not to do with being dirty" but as she likes water. I assume a well done to one of their researchers may be in order?

After all the 'heated debates' I have witnessed it just tickled me. A bit like someone you know appearing on TV 😆

Have also made a duplicate post (in Telly Addicts) which I know irritates some posters. Wasn't sure where to put it. The do you/don't you shower generally gets plonked in AIBU but I don't have a question so that would be pointless.

I don’t face the world until I’ve had a daily shower and hair wash. I’d feel greasy x

Churchview · 22/04/2024 15:51

It didn't matter if you didn't wash in the 1970s as the smell of fag smoke and the intense pong of Old Spice, Aqua Manda and plastic car seats pretty much drowned out any any other smells.

Remoteaccess · 22/04/2024 15:53

Mothership4two · 22/04/2024 14:18

It's not daft to hope it doesn't turn nasty! Also goes against MN talk guidelines. I can but ask.

Nastiness is really unnecessary on here @Remoteaccess or any time.

If posters want to rehash the usual arguments and unpleasantness I'll step away as that's contrary to my intentions and boring IMO.

You sound a bit militant 😬

fromaytobe · 22/04/2024 15:56

I've got very thick long hair that takes forever to dry, so I certainly don't wash that every day.

themanwhobroketneworld · 22/04/2024 15:57

I truly hope this thread stays light and doesn't turn into another angry bun fight on here. Will ask MNHQ to take down if it goes that way

What would it be reported as though? Stink hate?

My foof gets fruity without a daily shower.

You win.

Gross. Brits need to shower more not less. This is why the tube is utterly minging on a hot day.

The Tube is one of the most touristy/multi cultural environments there is 😂

SallyWD · 22/04/2024 16:04

I really think everyone's different. My DD needs to show more than my DS for example. I need to shower more than my DH. DH can remain very fragrant for a couple of days. I can't!

Actually friends and family would say I'm so laid back person I'm practically horizontal.

I just don't particularly want or appreciate pissy comments @Remoteaccess

As far as a know, apes don't have access to a hot power shower and a bottle of Radox!

Do they not?

Why post about it then? These threads always turn out the same way!

LuckysDadsHat · 22/04/2024 16:14

I would stink if I didn't shower every day. Peri meno has not been kind in that way! Also my skin feels awful if I don't shower every day like it actually feels dirty and bleurgh.

Tlolljs · 22/04/2024 16:15

pinkmags · 22/04/2024 14:43

How often do other great apes shower?

Why are we the only animal that feels the need to shower daily with soap?

Humans have survived for all but a fraction of our history with neither showers nor soap. There are plenty of humans who still do.

We certainly don't need a daily shower or bath imo.

Have you ever been to the zoo? It stinks.

goldenretrievermum5 · 22/04/2024 16:17

I shower every other day on the advice of a dermatologist due to dry skin. Of course in hot weather/after exercise this changes though. The whole ‘people who don’t shower everyday/multiple times a day are smelly and unclean’ argument is bollocks. I know for a fact that I never get wiffy - the scent of sweat, even my own gives me a migraine and if that wasn’t enough I have a typically brutally honest teenage DD who would very happily pull me up on it if she thought I was unclean or smelly!!

Obviously I was hoping it wouldn't!

Did say "light-hearted"

I've retired (early) so it's not a daily thing for me anymore, and TBH it's three times a week for me, unless I'm going somewhere special. So I have a massive shower on Sunday, Wednesday and Friday or Saturday. In between I wash at the sink, bits and all, just like my mother and granny did in between their weekly bath.

OK, I don't go to work anymore, and don't go to they gym (shudder) either so how can I get smelly and sweaty? I do the heavy housework and gardening/shopping etc. on the days before my scheduled shower lol.

The most important thing for smelling fresh, is clean clothes and underwear/socks every single day. Every day. That's all, thank you from a sensible person who is clean every day, and doesn't waste litres and litres of water either!

PotatoPudding · 22/04/2024 16:19

VelvetDragonfly · 22/04/2024 13:38

It's bullshit. People get environmental dirt on them from the air and sweat/oils on them from their own bodies. Of course people need a daily bath/shower. The skin/hair argument is totally nonsense. Thats what moisturizer and conditioner were invented for. So people could be both clean and unshrivelled. No reason to be a dried out itchy flaky raisin at all.

Of course they're right about it being more expensive than not showering daily, but that doesn't mean it's not needed. Healthy food is more expensive than junk. Growing children required the purchase of new clothes that fitted. A property with a bedroom for your children is more expensive than a one bedroom flat. All these things are still needed, even though you can survive without them.

Humans existing is bad for the environment. Perhaps we should all put an end to our existence in the name of savings the planet? Or maybe thinking what's best for the planet has to be weighed up with what's best for us.

Unless you're in a situation where you're choosing between water to drink and water to wash with, people should shower/bath daily. Not doing so is deliberately scummy. Skipping your bath/shower should be a last resort only if you can't help it and have no choice. Like if there's zero spare water or you're too ill to do it.

They can say whatever they like on a TV show it's never going to change my opinion.

Edited

TBH, other than in hot weather, I have never noticed anyone smell bad, and I have a very sensitive sense of smell. Maybe their smell is masked by my own, as I am one of those non-daily showerers you speak of. I also wear the exact same hoodie from Monday to Friday and wash my jeans fortnightly.

Churchview · 22/04/2024 16:19

The big angry MN shower debate

This would make an excellent TV series.

Mothership4two · 22/04/2024 16:21

@sandrapinchedmysandwich

It's such a personal thing and there really is no right or wrong.

👏

  1. You can have a shower without washing your hair. Do you think those of us with curly or Afro hair don't wash for a week? Tue your hair up. Get a shower cap. Hold the shower head.
  1. Moisturiser.
  1. Don't stay in the shower for 30 minutes and boil yourself as I like to do
Beautiful3 · 22/04/2024 16:49

I grew up with a weekly bath here. When I moved out of my parents home, I had a shower/bath 2-3 times a week. When mine became over weight I suddenly smelled and needed a daily bath. Now I've lost the weight, I don't smell at all and only need one once a week.

KestrelMoon · 22/04/2024 16:54

Being a very wet island, we do not lack water for showering. It doesn’t harm ‘the environment’ to wash daily- and yes by wash I do mean more than a swipe with a wet flannel on the pits and bits.

We should be showering daily. If climate change continues, we may need to shower more often as the hotter it gets the more we sweat and ming.

Your sense of smell can’t be that good if you have never noticed anyone smelling bad.

ArcticBells · 22/04/2024 16:56

I cannot go to bed without a bath no matter how late I get home. Bath most mornings too.
