Daily showering/not showering discussion (Loose Women)

That MN perennial favourite 'showering' was under discussion on today's show and it made me smile because it seems to come up all the time on here. They said a daily shower is not necessary contraversial and two to three times a week is fine: their point was that daily showering is expensive, not great for the environment, might not be good for you as dries out skin and hair. They all were in agreement but Nadia said she likes a daily shower "not to do with being dirty" but as she likes water. I assume a well done to one of their researchers may be in order?

After all the 'heated debates' I have witnessed it just tickled me. A bit like someone you know appearing on TV 😆

Have also made a duplicate post (in Telly Addicts) which I know irritates some posters. Wasn't sure where to put it. The do you/don't you shower generally gets plonked in AIBU but I don't have a question so that would be pointless.

I truly hope this thread stays light and doesn't turn into another angry bun fight on here. Will ask MNHQ to take down if it goes that way

SO bossy! 😂🙄

wednesdayaffairnc · 22/04/2024 22:05

Every other day for me.

pinkmags · 22/04/2024 23:05

Does he wash his feet every day?

Some of us have very dry feet with virtually no sweat glands - i can wear the same pair of socks for a week and they would not smell!

Other family members have much more sweaty and therefore smelly feet.

So, it really depends!

lol. Fake tan doesn’t come off with a swab of cotton.

Can confirm that it most definitely does. We had a right laugh when teen DD had bloods done with a few layers of fake tan on before a night out!

Freesia9 · 22/04/2024 23:16

Don't understand how women on their period don't shower twice a day! 🤔

Why? I’ve always got a tampon or a cup in. There is no blood leaking anywhere

It's fine if you change your tampon/pad/cup regularly, surely.

anonymous98 · 22/04/2024 23:34

It really depends on the person. Some people are less smelly than others.

I shower every day if I'm meeting people/going to work/exercising. I'm a bit more lax if I'm just sitting around the house. More than 48 hours and I feel really icky.

Jk987 · 22/04/2024 14:50

What about all your crevices especially down below! What if you're on your period? Takes 2 mins to have a thorough soap down and rinse. Why wouldn't you?

Gynaes will tell you no soap on your vulva. Ideally plain water or alternatively an emollient.

JenniferBooth · 22/04/2024 23:50

Practice nurse told me just sitting in soapy water is enough

benefitstaxcredithelp · 22/04/2024 23:50

It’s all personal though.

Some people need to shower daily. Some don’t. My sweet smelling child doesn’t smell ever. Another child gets whiffy after two days so has regular showers. My DH needs to shower and wash his hair daily as he has very fine lank hair and gets sweaty. I don’t as I have Afro hair which only needs washing once a week and I am absolutely fine if I miss a day in the shower as I don’t sweat much. I do have a wash though on non shower days.

Like most things in life there’s no right or wrong.

Most dermatologists don’t recommend daily showers or baths it interferes with your skin’s natural PH and micro biome.

Silkymum · 23/04/2024 00:05

Everyone I know showers or bathes daily or close enough. I think that's the norm. A few shower/bath a bit less due to skin conditions, or older people who don't get as smelly as retired and minimally exert themselves. I know people bath babies less now, especially at the very beginning. But by the time they are toddlers they get pretty grubby, then kids there's swimming lessons, sand, slime, muddy puddles, messy eating. Then puberty hits and stinky pits and bits that need cleaning every day and spotty faces that need washing, yes you can do all of that with a flannel, but easier to have a quick shower. Then you're an adult, and although they seem to go into three camps then, the morning washers to get ready for the day (office jobs), and the bedtime washers at the end of the day (manual jobs) and the hygiene enthusiasts who do both.

KThnxBye · 23/04/2024 00:14

I did not live in a house with a shower until I was nearly 30. I didn’t know anyone else with a shower unless they had lots of money or a fancy house.

All of my DC have lived in a house without a shower in it and all are under 18.

Why is a shower the only measurable method of cleanliness, or has shower become synonym for wash? We wash. We have always washed. Surely that’s all there is to it?

DorisDoesDoncaster · 23/04/2024 00:31

It’s peoples’ unwashed hair I can smell on the tube. How are you supposed to clean your hair with a flannel? All the oils, smell of cooking from the day before. 🤮

KindaBinding81 · 23/04/2024 00:39

VelvetDragonfly · 22/04/2024 13:38

It's bullshit. People get environmental dirt on them from the air and sweat/oils on them from their own bodies. Of course people need a daily bath/shower. The skin/hair argument is totally nonsense. Thats what moisturizer and conditioner were invented for. So people could be both clean and unshrivelled. No reason to be a dried out itchy flaky raisin at all.

Of course they're right about it being more expensive than not showering daily, but that doesn't mean it's not needed. Healthy food is more expensive than junk. Growing children required the purchase of new clothes that fitted. A property with a bedroom for your children is more expensive than a one bedroom flat. All these things are still needed, even though you can survive without them.

Humans existing is bad for the environment. Perhaps we should all put an end to our existence in the name of savings the planet? Or maybe thinking what's best for the planet has to be weighed up with what's best for us.

Unless you're in a situation where you're choosing between water to drink and water to wash with, people should shower/bath daily. Not doing so is deliberately scummy. Skipping your bath/shower should be a last resort only if you can't help it and have no choice. Like if there's zero spare water or you're too ill to do it.

They can say whatever they like on a TV show it's never going to change my opinion.

Edited

This!! The mums that showered/bathed just two to three times a week at my DC's primary were very obvious!!

Starseeking · 23/04/2024 00:41

I shower every day and live in London.

Last week I got on a mainline train and the man opposite smelt as if he's been sleeping in his clothes for the last week, and not washing. I had to move seats as the smell was making me feel sick. I then watched several people sit down next to him then get up and move elsewhere, presumably finding the smell unbearable.

I can't wash my hair daily. But I cover it if I'm cooking and I don't tend to cook stuff that clings (chips etc are the worst)
Usually wash it twice a week

Paninaro94 · 23/04/2024 01:00

Shower daily with hair washing. I’d rather phone in sick for work than turn up without a having had a shower. I’ve conditioned my body to get used to showering every day. I would get sore if I went two or three days without washing my parts.

People who pretend they don’t shower or bathe daily for the sake of the environment? I’m sure there are more effective ways of saving the planet than that. Up to you if you don’t want to shower daily of course, no need to justify it.

Not saying that's not bad but I find peoples perfume equally horrific

I've retired (early) so it's not a daily thing for me anymore, and TBH it's three times a week for me, unless I'm going somewhere special. So I have a massive shower on Sunday, Wednesday and Friday or Saturday. In between I wash at the sink, bits and all, just like my mother and granny did in between their weekly bath.

OK, I don't go to work anymore, and don't go to they gym (shudder) either so how can I get smelly and sweaty? I do the heavy housework and gardening/shopping etc. on the days before my scheduled shower lol.

The most important thing for smelling fresh, is clean clothes and underwear/socks every single day. Every day. That's all, thank you from a sensible person who is clean every day, and doesn't waste litres and litres of water either!

You have a ‘massive’ shower three times a week and that’s not wasting water? I have a quick shower six days a week and a slightly longer one once a week when I wash my hair. I would wager I use less water than you.

You can easily have a shower in the time it takes to faff around with a flannel wash.

I live in a hot country. Once you’ve passed puberty everyone needs to bathe daily unless they’re sick. Public transport in the UK definitely stinks more than where I live however the worst I’ve experienced is Italy as nobody seems to believe in deodorant.

DorisDoesDoncaster · 23/04/2024 01:02

Even if their hair doesn’t stink of cooking, I can tell if someone hasn’t washed it that morning before work, if stood or sat next to them. It just has that smell of staleness. I prefer to smell fresh so wash mine every morning without fail, since I was a teenager hanging over a bath with one of those bath tap extension things, coz my folks couldn’t afford to install a shower.

So if they washed it the night before, you can tell? Confused
Some hair types can't be washed daily and they don't smell. Mine doesn't get greasy, it gets drier without washing. I've never stood next to someone with afro textured hair and thought it smelt unwashed

Just drying it takes me 45-60 mins and that's not including washing, applying products, styling. I don't have 90 mins a day to spend on my hair and it would wreck it

coxesorangepippin · 23/04/2024 01:52

I cannot stand the thought of a flannel sink wash

Just so depressing

If you physically cannot go a day without showering due to issues with your ‘parts’ then you’re washing far too much and have upset your skin’s natural microbiome

Soap isn’t even meant to go down there!

Thats biologically not possible.
