Stonehenge - anyone been recently?

I'm taking some visitors to Stonehenge but I haven't been for many years. Is it easy to "do"? We are thinking of combining it with some other places, not sure where yet, and maybe staying out 1 or 2 nights.

Does anyone have any recommendations? How about if we visited Avebury, Bath, maybe drove on to Cornwall?

I've never been but I do know there's a public path you can walk along and get a great view for free, practically walking alongside the people who have paid £50+ to get into the official site. Worth looking into!

There is a free public footpath right next to Stonehenge. Everything you need to know to find it is in this post.

Yes I go regularly to Stonehenge. Definitely worth combining with a trip to Avebury.

Free entry to Stonehenge if you have National Trust or English Heritage, shockingly expensive otherwise. Good visitor centre.

At Avebury they have guided walks, it costs a bit extra but definitely worth every penny,!

Cornwall is many hours further driving - If you've only got one or two nights I'd stay around Avebury. You could also visit Old Sarum, if all fit and mobile for a hilly hike!

Thank you for suggestions. I do have a National Trust card, so will be sure to use that. Looks like Stonehenge, Avebury, then maybe a night in Bath, would be good. Might combine with Salisbury Cathedral and perhaps the Haynes car museum.

Please do post suggestions! I’d hate to miss anything. Will look up hotels in Bath.

IMO Avebury is much nicer to visit than Stonehenge. In Avebury it’s a bit of a walk from the NT car park but level. Can be very muddy. You can also walk to West Kennet Long Barrow, usually enough parking on the main road, it’d be quite a long walk from Avebury. Not sure what access there is to Silbury Hill now.
Stonehenge you park at the huge ugly visitor centre and there’s a land train to the stones. I’m old enough to remember parking on the road and walking right up to them, no fences, no entrance charge. And I climbed Silbury Hill though I’m not sure we were supposed to.
For Salisbury Cathedral and Haynes you might find staying in Salisbury easier, and go along the A303 to the motor museum.

Just a local knowledge. The A360 between the Avenue and Stonehenge is closed till Juky creating a huge detour all the way through Wilton, or having to go back along the A303 and through Amesbury to Salisbury. It's a right pita.

If you’re feeling spendy, you can take a guided tour actually among the stones at sunrise or sunset at Stonehenge when it isn’t open for general public. I’ve just booked this for my husband’s birthday - friends went last year and said it was amazing.
